1,204,264. Making rip-seams. FREDERICK A. KRAUSE ASSOCIATES Inc. 26 Jan., 1968 [27 Jan., 1967], No. 4132/68. Headings B3J and B3Q. A method of grooving sheet material 12 to a precise thickness irrespective of commercial variations in thickness comprises supporting the material on one side, moving a grooving tool 78 against the material from the other side, and allowing the material to move with the tool when the tool reaches a predetermined distance from the supported side. In the example, the grooves form lines of weakness delineating a tear strip in a can lid which is stamped from the sheet between dies 78, 46 having ridges 86 for forming the grooves. A ram driven, through an eccentric and flywheels (32), Fig. 1 (not shown), by a motor (30) carries the top die 78 and a cutting ring 68 which coacts with a lower cutting ring 38 for severing lid blanks 12a from sheet fed between stripping plates 26, 28 by rolls (14). The lower die 46 is biased upwardly by an hydraulic piston 56 but is moved downwardly at the end of the ram-stroke by contact between the end of the ring 68 and the die.
