Abstract

1,112,689. Sub-press mechanisms. MINNIE PUNCH & DIE CO. Inc. 27 May, 1965, No. 25008/65. Headings B3A and B3W. A punch and die sub-press assembly consists of one or more punches 224 secured to a punch holder plate 202 of soft metal and one or more dies 226 secured to a die holder plate 204 of soft metal, the plates 202, 204 being urged apart by springs 218 and being guided by guide posts 208 and guide bushings 216. The assembly may be secured to the fixed bolster 238 of a press as shown or may be secured to the movable platen of a press (Fig. 1, not shown). The workpiece 246 may be positioned by guide pins (not shown) and is stripped from the punch 224 by a resilient stripper 225. The return movement of the punches 224 under the action of springs 218 is limited by C-clips 220 secured in grooves in the ends of the guide rods 208. The punches 224, dies 226, guide rods 208 and guide bushings 216 are all provided at their ends with an undercut recess e.g. 116 (Fig. 10B) positioned between a body portion, e.g. 118 and a portion e.g. 114 of larger diameter than the body portion and are secured to the plates 202, 204 as follows: the body portion 118 is inserted in a hole in the plate having the same diameter as the body portion 118 and the larger diameter portion 114 is then pressed against the surface of the plate to deform the soft metal of the plate into the undercut recess 116 to secure the member to the plate. The punches and dies, guide rods and bushings may be steel and the soft metal of the plates 202, 204 may be aluminium or magnesium. As described the guide rods 208 are first secured to the punch plate 202 using a master pattern and the guide bushes 216 are then secured to the die plate 204 using the guide rods 208 to align the bushes 216. The die 226 is then secured to the die plate 204 and the punch 224 is then secured to the punch plate 202 using the die 226 to align the punch 224. Alternatively the punch 224 may be secured to the punch plate 202 and is used to align the die 226.
