Abstract
1,081,820. Punches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd., and R. D. RUNCIMAN. June 29, 1966 [June 29, 1965], No. 27505/65. Heading B3W. A piercing tool 1 for simultaneously punching a plurality of holes comprises a multiplicity of punches 6, each supported from a punch-holder 4 so as to be movable relative to the punch-holder in the direction of the axis of the hole made by that punch, and a removable key plate 7 adapted, when fixed to the punch-holder, to constrain the movement of selected punches so that only the selected punches are effective. The punch-holder 4 has a recess 5 which extends into the block from the upper face and from one side and a counter-sunk hole to receive each punch. The keyplate 7 rests on shoulders 9 and has a hole corresponding to each punch. Studs 8 are inserted in selected holes according to the desired hole pattern. The keyplate is retained by a block 10 and a plate 11. The punchholder is mounted on the ram 12 of a press, and as the ram descends those punches which are not constrained by studs recede into the punch-holder. A plate 2 which acts as a holddown during punching is acted on by the punchholder through rubber pads 16. On the return stroke the plate 2 engages stop-nuts 22 on posts 18 and acts as a stripper. In a modification the key plate comprises two thin plates, one having a matrix of holes corresponding to the punchholder and the other being plain. Countersunk headed studs in the required positions are held in place by screwing the plates together. The tool is for perforating printed circuit boards.
