Abstract

1,184,598. Sub-press mechanisms; stamping. F. J. THOMAS. 18 April, 1967 [1 Aug., 1966], No. 17700/67. Headings B3E, B3Q and B3W. A cam set for a machine, e.g. a punch press, comprises first and second plates at least one of which reciprocates towards and away from the other in a first direction, first and second cam members formed with mating camming surfaces permitting relative reciprocation therebetween only in a second direction inclined relative to the first direction, said first cam member being secured to one of the plates, said second cam member being formed with means adapted to connect with the other of said plates and to limit relative movement therebetween to reciprocation in a third direction inclined to both said first and second directions at least during a first predetermined portion of the movement between said plates. An upper ram plate 11 carries a pressure pad 16 and driver posts 17, 117. A lower plate 12 carries a die forming support 13, which co-operates with the pad 16 to form a workpiece 14, and heel blocks 19, 24. The workpiece 14 is flanged by a plate 157 on a holder 26 moved horizontally along the plate 12 by a V-block cam 23 pushed down by the post 117 and sliding on inclined surfaces on the block 24 and holder 26, the sliding surfaces being of T-slot and T-projection form. A T-projection 128 on the V-block 23 engages a T-slot 125 as the plate 11 reaches its lowest position and when the plate 11 rises the projection 128 moves out of the slot 125 to disengage the post 117. A trimming tool 57 is pushed up a slide 50 on the plate 12, to trim flash 45 from the workpiece 14, by a V-block cam 18 engaging the heel block 19 and a block 22 carrying the rod 57. A spring pin 35 holds the V-block 18 in its upward position after it has been disengaged by the rising driver post 17. A plurality of V-blocks 37, 38, 39 and a heel block 41, Fig. 5, may be used to move a tool holder 36 horizontally. An embossing tool 240, Fig. 2, on a holder 222 is horizontally reciprocated on a vertically moved ram plate 211, by engagement with a V-block 218, on a bolster 212, engaging a heel block 219 on the plate 211 to emboss the end of a workpiece 214.
