832,070. Making electrical connectors; extruding. BURNDY CORPORATION, [formerly BURNDY ENGINEERING CO. Inc.]. Sept. 24, 1956 [Sept. 26, 1955], No. 29056/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] Apparatus for forming and work-hardening a metal slug 23 into a connector-pin (see Group XXXVI) comprises an extrusion punch 30 and a split die 32 which is divided into two upper parts 34, 36, spring-biased apart, forming recesses 35, 37 for a cup-shaped portion of the pin, and a hollowed-out bottom part 38 forming recesses 39, 40 for the pin, and flange 20, respectively. A knock-out pin 42 may be provided in die 38. Other parts of the apparatus comprise closing and retaining wedges 44, 46, a holding block 48, stops 50, 52 to control the amount of wedge openings, wedge springs 54, 56 for wedge pins 58, 60 which time the action, the punch and wedge holder 62, guide-plates 64, 66, 68, wedge openings 70, 72, the die parts, biasing spring 74, dowel pins 76 for aligning die parts 34, 36 and slots 78, 80 for fastening the punch and wedge holder to the ram of the press.
