Abstract

852,563. Making electrical components; jointing by stamping and forging. AMP Inc. June 4, 1958 [June 20, 1957], No. 17830/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] A connector member 30, 33 (Fig. 1), of sheetmetal, is formed so that when crimped to a conductor C (Fig. 3) the rear portions 26 which have inwardly-directed protrusions 24, grip the conductor insulation while the adjacent arms are squeezed to a substantially B-shaped crosssection with a trough 42 (Fig. 4) in the flat side of the B to grip the bared wire of the conductor. The connecting members are formed in a highspeed press carrying, on its platen, anvils 68, 70 and 72 (Fig. 10), resiliently mounted support 73 which has a bearing-surface 75 and a supporting edge 77, and shearing-blade 74. Co-operating with these and carried by a tool-holder fixed to the ram of the press are dies 56 and 58, spacers 60 and 64, holding down plate 62 and blade 66. The B-cross-section crimp is formed by die 58 and anvil 70 (Fig. 13) and the crimp round the insulation by die 56 and anvil 68 (Fig. 15) while the metal strip 14 (Fig. 10) connecting, the connector member to another connector member is removed by the blade 66. The support 76 provides a feed-track for the connector-members and movement of the feeding means is co-ordinated with movement of the ram carrying the dies so that a connector is fed as the ram travels through its cycle.
