Abstract

798,134. Making electrical components; jointing by stamping. AIRCRAFT-MARINE PRODUCTS, Inc. April 25, 1956 [April 25, 1955], No. 12682/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A tool for crimping an electrical connector on to an electrical conductor comprises a pair of die sets mounted side by side to operate simultaneously, the first die set co-operating to crimp a ferrule of the connector to the conductor and the second die set co-operating to crimp an insulation support portion of the connector to an insulated part of the conductor, and supports for the dies of the second die set mounted on the first die set with interconnected means to render said supports adjustable without removal from the tool so that the distance between the dies of the second set can be altered without altering the distance between the dies of the first die set. The die assembly includes crimping members A and B. Each member has a supporting plate 12 for the crimping means 14 and one member has a crimping die-plate 16 integral with the plate 12 and the other a conductor indenting anvil. A pair of flare plates 18, 18<SP>1</SP> are positioned one on each side of the die-plate 16. The insulation crimping plate 14 has a projection 26 on one side of the die 28 and a step 30 on the other, the projection 26 of the crimping means of member A engaging the step 30 of the crimping means of member B and vice versa. To provide for adjustment of the crimping dies a slot 32 having steps 34, 36, 38 is provided in the crimping plate 14 at the edge that seats on the supporting plate 12. A spring-loaded wedge assembly 40 having a rectangularly-shaped shoulder 42 adjusts the position of the crimping plate 14. The steps 34, 36, 38 of the crimping plate seat on the rectangular shoulder 42. Screws 46 passing through slotted holes in the crimping plate 14 hold the plates and the wedge assembly in proper alignment. In operation, the members A and B are secured to the opposing jaws of the crimping press and an insulated connector barrel 60 and the bare end 62 of a conductor 63 are placed in the crimping die 21. The insulated skirt of the connector seats in the insulation crimping dies 28 and the insulation extends no further than the inner flare plate 18. When the press jaws are closed the conductor crimping die 21 and the anvil co-operate to crimp the conductor on to the ferrule portion 64 on the connector and the insulation crimping dies 28 crimp the skirt 66 of the connector on to the insulation of the conductor, (Fig. 9). The flare plates act as tapering means between the dies 21 and 28 to prevent the formation of sharp corners and tearing of the insulation. One of the flare plates is cut away to expose the dies to enable the degree of closure of said dies to be observed.
