Abstract

1451114 Making electrical connections; shearing AMP Inc 14 Dec 1973 [8 Jan 1973] 57972/73 Headings B3A and B3W [Also in Division H2] A plurality of wires is assembled simultaneously in two connectors using a machine (Fig. 12, not shown) having a slide (90) to receive the two connectors side by side. Fig. 11. The wires are laid across the tops of the connectors (Fig. 10, not shown) and a number of punches 110 mounted on a ram (108, Fig. 12) are brought down on to the wires thereby crimping ears 68 over the insulation at 122, cutting through the wire insulation at 116 and shearing the wires by plates 84, 84<SP>1</SP>, at 112. The disposition of the connectors before the wires are joined to them, is such that on rotation of the connectors through 180 degrees corresponding wires are connected up. An hermaphrodite electrical connector comprises an insulating housing 10 which will mate with an identical housing (Fig. 7), the housings being held together by latching arms 50. Teeth 24, 26 of one housing enter a recess (30, Figs. 3 and 5, not shown) of the other housing while tooth 28 and a corner of the housing slide down the outer face (21) of the other housing. Each compartment 12 has a connector 14 which has been pressed from a sheet of metal and comprises a wire receiving slot 64 which cuts through the insulation of the wire 6, a pair of arms 68 to be crimped about the wire, a shearing plate 84, and resilient arms 72, 74 that engage the resilient arms 74<SP>1</SP>, 72<SP>1</SP> respectively of the other connector. The connector has barbs 86 to keep it in place in the compartment 12.
