Abstract

1,086,033. Making electrical connections; shearing; stamping. AMP Inc. May 19, 1966 [June 22, 1965], No. 22325/66. Headings B3A, B3Q and B3W. [Also in Division B4] Apparatus for trimming the ends of a pair of wires and crimping a ferrule 2 to the trimmed ends of the wires comprises a crimping anvil 28 and a crimping die formed in two parts which trims the ends of the wires and crimps the ferrule thereto. Wires 12, 14 are placed in the offset die halves 56, 58 and are located in the respective notches 117 of plates 116, 118, whereupon a handle 104 is swung over to align the die halves, thereby trimming the ends of the wires 12, 14. The die halves are mounted on a pin 62, which is driven upwardly as handles 80, 92 are moved towards each other, so that the die forces the connector against the anvil 28. The pin 62 moves freely in slots 120 in the plates 116, 118 so that they remain stationary. The ferrules are held against a plate 50 by a spring 42 and as the die parts 56, 58 move up to the anvil they contact the ferrule magazine 32 pivoting it upwardly and moving the plate 50 against a spring 54. The side walls of the ferrule are folded over inwardly and projections therein pierce the insulation of the wires, Figs. 1, 2 (not shown).
