Abstract

1,181,337. Making electrical connections: jointing by stamping. AMP Inc. 13 Sept., 1968 [9 Oct., 1967], No. 43788/68. Headings B3A and B3Q. [Also in Division H2] A connector 14, Fig. 9, connects two pairs of insulated telephone circuit wires, the operation being carried out in the crimping apparatus shown in Fig. 1. The connector similar to that of Specification 1,045,380, comprises two metal crimping ferrules 16, 18 formed with pressedout sections 30, 34 to give a preferred axis of bending A-A and tongues 26 pressed-out from the base 20 forming notches 28. The ferrules 16, 18 are insulated from each other by a film 40 of insulating material such as polyethylene terephthalate, bonded to the outside ferrule surfaces. The crimping apparatus comprises two block members 48, 481 slidably mounted on guide rods 52 and urged apart by springs 56, 56<SP>1</SP>. Both ends of a guide bar 74 of a connector support and wire cutter member 75 are spring-loaded in bores provided in the blocks 48, 48<SP>1</SP>. When the blocks are moved together the cutting blades 72, 72<SP>1</SP> recede into slots 70, 70<SP>1</SP> and the arms and slots 50, 50<SP>1</SP> interlace to bring a pair of die cavities 60, 60<SP>1</SP> into direct opposition. In operation, the support member 75 receives a connector, the arms 72, 72<SP>1</SP> locating in the slots 37 so that two ferrules 16, 18 face towards the die cavities 60, 60<SP>1</SP>. The pairs of wires approach from opposite faces of the member 75 and the individual wires are laid in the die cavities 60, 60<SP>1</SP> with their ends turned into the slots 70, 70<SP>1</SP>. When the two blocks 48, 48<SP>1</SP> are drawn together, by means of tool handles or a power driven tool head, the wires are sheared as cutter members 72, 72<SP>1</SP> enter the slots 70, 70<SP>1</SP> and the connector is engaged by die surfaces 60, 60<SP>1</SP> causing wall sections 22, 24 to curl over on to the wires. The wires impinge on the edge of notches 28 which pierce the wire insulation. In a further embodiment of the connector, the ends of the base portions of the insulating covering extend beyond the sidewall portion. These tongues may be gripped during the crimping operations to reduce the likelihood of bending along the axis of the connector.
