Abstract

1497494 Electric couplings AMP Inc 20 April 1976 [12 May 1975] 15830/76 Heading H2E An electrical connector comprises a moulded plastics insulating housing 11 having in opposed faces of the housing cavities 13 in each of which a respective slotted metal terminal 12 is mounted, a slot of the terminal partially registering with a slot 21 in the housing and one wall of slot 21 being formed by a resilient portion 24 so that when a wire is pushed into the slots the wire conductor engages the terminal slot and the wire is held in the conductor by the portion 24. In the illustrated embodiment the terminal is U-shaped and has pairs of registering slots 14, 15 between which further slots 17 are located which allow flexure of the fingers defining one side of the slots 14, 15. One slot of each pair is narrower than the other so that when a wire is retained by the connector one slot engages the wire conductor and the other the insulation. The inner end of each housing slot is widened and a wire to be retained by the connector is pushed through a slot 21 and thereby displaces both the finger which constitutes the resilient portion 24 and the dividing wall 26 between slots until, on reaching the widened slot portion, the finger and dividing wall move back into place and the wire is trapped (Figs. 5 to 7, not shown). The connectors can be manufactured very small for use in splicing telephone cables. A plurality of housings can be manufactured on a perforated carrier strip 31 which permits moulding of the housings directly on to the strip, the housings being retained on the strip by integral studs. The housing has a base portion 29 of reduced width to provide access for wire insertion tooling, insertion being carried out automatically by a ram as the strip 31 is advanced past the tooling. In another embodiment (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown) three slots are provided in the housing for each terminal and corresponding slots in the terminals enabling a tap to be taken from a spliced cable.
