Abstract

956,917. Two-part couplings; binding-posts; terminal blocks. BURNDY CORPORATION. June 1, 1962 [June 5, 1961], No. 21328/62. Heading H2E. A connector for a series of flat co-planar conductors supported in a dielectric, namely a " tape " cable, comprises similarly spaced contact members, each having a number of teeth which may be so moved relative to the cable as to penetrate its insulation and make a scraping connection with a conductor. In all the following embodiments, the contact teeth act in such a way as to cause varying penetration of the cable, so preventing severance of the conductors in front of the connections. Two-part couplings.-In one embodiment, Fig. 2, a pair of wedge-shaped insulating blocks 11, 13, carry contacts 15, 17 staggered transversely and longitudinally for engagement with spaced conductors 37 of tape cable 35. The latter is passed through a slit 33 in a housing 27 having a tapered cavity 29 to receive blocks 11, 13, and between said blocks which are cammed together and against the cable by the cavity 29. Each of contacts 15 and 17 has teeth 41 and 43 of varying length, and terminate in spring tabs 45 and 47 respectively. These tabs project through a sealing gasket 57 and a pressure plate 59 to engage with a similar, mating connector. In another embodiment, Fig. 9, two tape cables may be connectad together by identical connector assemblies 211, 213 and an intermediate block 215. A block 217 carries contacts 219 with teeth 223 of varying length projecting from the surface of a V-shaped recess 221 of the block for engagement with the conductors of a cable 35 passed through a cable clamp 231 and around a pressure bar 225, which is then tightened against the block 217. The front portions of contacts 219 are tabs 243 which mate with corresponding tabs inside passages 241 of the block 215. Variants of the contact-pressure bar arrangement of this connector are described (Figs. 14, 15, 16, 17, not shown). " Terminals.-fig. 5 shows an assembly for making connections between the conductors of a tape cable 35 and flexible conductors 119. Arcuate tapered contacts 111 are free to move transversely through vertical arcuate slots 113 in a block 115. The cable 35 is inserted through a transverse slot intersecting slots 113 until it engages teeth 117 on contacts 111, when it is pulled back, drawing with it contacts 111 which are then cammed into the cable by the slot surfaces. In the embodiments of Fig. 20, a contact block 711 is hinged at 713 to a base 715, and has contacts 717 which are eccentrically shaped around the pivot 713 and have teeth to engage a cable 35 when block 711 is swung into a closed position.
