Abstract

1,209,452. Electric couplings. McMURDO INSTRUMENT CO. Ltd. 24 Jan., 1968 [24 Jan., 1967], No. 3546/67. Heading H2E. An electrical connector for a tape cable 1 comprises a body member 8 containing a contact 12 having tooth portions 13, 14 which pierce cable insulation 3 and engage a conductor 2 of the tape cable 1 when the member 8 cooperates with a base 4, a projection 6 on which enters a recess in member 8 thereby flexing the cable between abutments 10 on the member 8. The contact 12 is located in a slot 11 extending to another slot 16 through which a terminal portion 15 of the contact 12 protrudes and a lip 17 on the terminal 15 engages an outer surface of the member 8 to prevent inadvertent removal of the contact 12. A single tooth or a plurality of teeth may be provided on either or both portions 13, 14. A resilient lining 20 is provided in the slot 11 between the member 8 and the contact 12. Similar linings 18, 19 may also be provided on the projection 6 and the base 4 to relieve stresses in the tape cable. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) the central projection is replaced by a cylinder, which is journalled between curved recesses in the body member and the base and has a diametral slot which receives the central portion of the tape cable; on rotating the cylinder the tape cable is drawn on to the tooth portions. A plurality of contacts 12 may be provided in body member 8, each engaging a different conductor 2 in the cable. The body member and the base are held together, e.g. by a screw threaded arrangement.
