Abstract

1,064,356. Crimping pliers. AMP Inc. March 16, 1965 [March 23, 1964], No. 11002/65. Heading B4W. In a tool for crimping electrical connectors arranged in strip form to wire, the head comprises a C-shaped frame having a web 20, an upper arm 24 on which is mounted an L-shaped die holder 30 carrying a fixed crimping die 38, and a lower arm 22 in which is secured a rod 26 having an axial bore in which is slidably mounted a ram 46 the projecting end of the ram carrying a crosshead 48 comprising an L-shaped block 50 having a crosshead frame plate 74 which carries a die 82. Handles 56 are pivoted to ears 52 which project from the block 50 on each side of the ram, each handle being pivotally connected intermediate its length to the end of the rod 26 by toggle links 60. The strip 2 of connectors is fed over surfaces 83, (85) of the crosshead 74 by a feed slide 84 reciprocable towards and away from the dies by a spring member 104 which extends through a guide (108), Fig. 3 (not shown), on the left-hand toggle pivot 62 and has one end secured to the slide and the other end 110 fixed to the common pivot 64 of the toggle links. The slide 84 has a slot in which is pivotally mounted a feed pawl (114) which is spring urged in a clockwise direction. On the opposite side of the dies 38, 82 is an indexing pawl (128) which is pivotally mounted in a slot in a housing (122) of the crosshead, the indexing pawl (128) being spring urged in a clockwise direction. A cover plate 144 is pivotally mounted on the crosshead plate 74 and has a flange having slots through which the pawls (114) and (128) protrude. A sector plate 178 is secured to a screw (188) extending through the pivot pin (58) on the left-hand handle. A pin (182) in the plate 178 normally engages in a slot (184) in the cover plate 144 to retain the cover plate in closed position. The cover plate 144 is raised to permit a strip of connectors to be laid on the surfaces 83, (85). To raise the cover plate 144, pressure is applied to the head of the screw (188) whereby the sector plate 186 is swung to the right and the pin (182) is moved beyond a cam surface 176 on the plate 144. The handles 56 are pressed together to move the crosshead 48 upwardly, the upper end of the spring 104 thus being forced to move inwardly to move the slide 84 to the right thus causing the feed pawl (114) to be depressed by engagement with the carrier strip 4, the pawl subsequently rising to engage in the next adjacent slot (12) in the strip. The upward movement of the crosshead causes the dies to close about the ferrule portion (18) of the connector in which the wire has been placed, the leg (162) of the depressor 36 on the upper arm 24 of the head engaging a corresponding projection of the shear plate 160, to shear out the metal slug (5) between the ferrule forming portions (18).
