Abstract

1404450 Jointing by stamping; making electrical connections AMP Inc 21 June 1974 [6 July 1973] 27536/74 Headings B3Q and B3A [Also in Division B4] A tool for compressing a workpiece between two dies and particularly for crimping a connector on to electrical conductor wires comprises a first movable handle 40 pivoted to the tool body on a first pivotal axis 42 for movement towards and away from a second handle 38, a ram 44 reciprocably supported in the body and carrying one, 45, of the two dies 45, 50, and a toggle mechanism comprising first and second toggle links 58, 60, the first toggle link 58 being pivoted to the tool body and to the second toggle link, the second toggle link being pivoted to the ram, the first toggle link being pivotally connected to one end of a connecting link 76 the other end of which is pivotally connected to the first handle which is adapted, on moving towards the second handle, partially to straighten the toggle mechanism to drive the ram, the first handle having a plurality of connecting link positions 83, 84 which are disposed at different distances from the first pivotal axis and a mechanism 96, 100, 92a, 92b, 92c preventing retrograde movement of the ram when the ram is at an intermediate position in its working stroke as shown in Fig. 4, the mechanism causing the other end of the connecting link 76 to shift from a connecting link position 83 relatively remote from the first pivotal axis to a connecting link position 84 relatively proximate the first pivotal axis during movement apart of the handles whereby during consecutive closing operations of the handles the toggle mechanism is successively partially straightened and the ram is driven through successive portions of its stroke with increasing mechanical advantage. A compression spring 86 urges the handle 40 to its open position. The movable die 45 carries a cutter bar 46 adapted to trim the end of wires to be connected by the crimped connector.
