Abstract

1325249 Making electrical connections; crimping; shearing ARTOS ENG CO 17 Dec 1971 [24 Dec 1970] 58766/71 Headings B3A B3Q and B3W Apparatus 10 for crimping a terminal 12 to an insulated non-metallic wire 14 comprises a die set, which includes a fixed anvil 71, Fig. 6, and a movable crimping die 79, means connected to the die 79 for bending the exposed conductor 22 of the wire on closing the die set and means for moving the die set so that the anvil bends the conductor backwardly. Lengths of wire 14, previously cut to length and having bared ends, are fed step-by-step to the apparatus by a conveyer (16), Fig. 1 (not shown), where the end of the wire is supported by a ramp 67. A motor 28 drives a shaft 32 via a reduction gear 30 and a crank on the end of the shaft reciprocates a slide block 78. The bending means comprises a flange 120 on a pusher plate 118, which moves downwardly with the slide block and a camming surface 104 pivots levers 96, 100, to advance a strip of terminals by a pawl 94. The leading terminal 12 is held on the anvil 71 by a spring loaded pin 112 and an air cylinder 132 is actuated to pivot a pair of fingers 126, Fig. 5, (not shown), to align and hold the wire 14 on the ramp 67, as the flange 120 bends the conductor 22. Cams 62, 64, Fig. 3, on the shaft 32 pivot a bell crank 44 via a connecting rod 50 to move the die set towards the wire, and as the die set advances the downwardly bent conductor is bent back, so that it lies on the bottom of the terminal 12. The die 79 then crimps the terminal on to the wire 14 and a cutter blade 116 simultaneously cuts off the terminal from the strip. Terminal applicators are located on either side of the conveyer (16) so that terminals may be applied simultaneously to both ends of the wire 14.
