Abstract

1,225,326. Making electrical connections; jointing by stamping; shearing. AMP. Inc. 9 May, 1969 [31 May, 1968], No. 23886/69. Headings B3A, B3Q and B3W. [Also in Division H2] A method of connecting terminals 8 to wires 4 of a substantially flat cable 2, the terminals being in strip form prior to connection to the wires, comprises holding the cable at a predetermined position relative to connecting means, intermittently feeding the cable to position the wires 4 for engagement by the connecting means, feeding the terminal strip to position the leading terminal for engagement by the connetting means to sever the leading terminal from the strip and crimp it to a wire. The cable holder 20.-The cable 2 is placed on a plate 24 of a cable holder 20 with a longitudinal edge engaging a surface 64 of a pivotable gauge block and its end aligned against a surface 90 of a clamping plate 92. It is then clamped to a boss 56 of an aligning slide 54 by swinging over a clamping pad 78, which is adjustably mounted on a lever by a screw 80. The cable is precisely located on the plate 24 by aligning a central wire with a slit 98 in a cover plate 100, which is secured to a base-plate 52 by the plate 92. A lamp (not shown) is placed in a recess beneath the slot 98, the width of which is equal to that of a wire 4, so that precise location of the cable is achieved by blocking out the light from the lamp, by moving the slide 54 by means of aligning screws 60. A clamp 34 is then positioned with the ends 48 of a press-bar located in notches 50 formed in ears 32 and levers 44 are swung inwardly and downwardly to clamp the cable to the plate 24. The crimping and shearing apparatus.-The cable holder 20 and cable 2 are located in a channel-shaped recess on the upper side of a rack bar 210 and are secured by a latching mechanism comprising a spring-biased flange 238 and block 236, which abuts a mounting bar (28) secured to the plate 24, Fig. 9 (not shown). A spring-loaded drag plate 244 imposes a slight drag on the bar 210, thereby preventing overfeeding. A feed finger 218 engages the rack bar 210 and it advances the bar step-by-step as a cam 230 on a rotating shaft 170 engages a follower 228 on a pivoted lever 224. The lever is made in two mutually adjustable parts to allow for variation in the stroke of the feed finger. At the end of each feed stroke, a wire 4 is precisely aligned with the crimping apparatus. The terminal strip is advanced by a finger 174, which is driven similarly to the finger 218 by a cam 192 and a further cam 168 actuates the crimping and shearing mechanism via a lever 154. The lever 154 drives a block 128 downwardly and an anvil 126 on a plate 127 secured to the block 128 shears off a terminal from the carrier strip in co-operation with a shear bar 132. The terminal is guided between fingers 134, 134<SP>1</SP> towards the cable. The fingers also move downwardly at first until a block 130, to which they are pivoted, abuts a fixed block 144 and as they move their edges are swung towards each other by a small amount as they are received in a recess 150. This brings the sides of the terminal into parallel relationship. Continued movement of the block 128 compresses a spacer block 146 and the plate 127 drives the sides of the terminal through the insulation of the cable. A fixed crimping die 118 bends the terminal sides around a wire 4 of the cable to secure it thereto.
