Abstract

1418466 Insulation stripping device BUNKER RAMO CORP 1 Dec 1972 [17 Dec 1971] 55513/72 Heading B3A [Also in Division H2] A device for stripping insulation from a conductor and adapted for use with a machine for securing terminals to conductors comprises cutting elements 34, 44 positioned on one side of the base 74 of the machine, gripping elements 88, 90 positioned on the opposite side, first and second camming elements 16, 22, means responsive to the first camming element for actuating the cutting and gripping elements, and means responsive to the second camming element for moving the gripping elements away from the cutting elements to remove the cut insulation from the conductor and position the bared end of the conductor ready for terminal attaching by a terminal applying member of the machine movable relative to the base. The machine is preferably a crimping machine and includes a crimping die 106, Fig. 1, attached to ram 20 and a crimping anvil 108 attached to base 74. The device is formed of three subassemblies, a camming sub-assembly 10, a cutting sub-assembly 12 and a gripping subassembly 14. Sub-assembly 10, consists of elements 16, 22 mounted on ram 20, the sections having respective inclined edges 122, 124 for camming spring-biased cam followers 46, 94. The position of the elements may be adjusted using a vernier 28. Sub-assembly 12 includes a housing 30 with adjustable blades 34, 44. Blade 34 is mounted on a blade holder 38 and blade 44 on cam follower 46. A vernier 42 indicates the gauge of the conductor wire to be stripped and the holder 38 can be adjusted by rotating head 40. A stop 58 mounted on a shaft 60 controls the amount of insulation stripped from the conductor. The gripping sub-assembly includes a block 76 secured to base 74 of the crimping machine and a slotted T-shaped member 80 hinged to the block. Gripping elements 88, 90 are mounted in the member 80, gripper 88 being attached to an adjusting screw 92 and gripper 90 to cam follower 94. The device may be added to existing crimping or other terminal applying machines. Operation.-A conductor 120 is inserted between the grippers and blades untifit abuts stop 58 and a machine cycle is mechanically initiated to lower ram 20. Inclined leading edge 122 makes contact with followers 46, 94 and cams them towards the conductor until the insulation is cut and the conductor gripped. Inclined edge 124 contacts a portion of follower 94 that extends beyond member 80 and causes the follower to move downwardly to pivot member 80 counter-clockwise about dowels 82. The gripped conductor is then pulled out from between blades 34, 44 leaving the insulation behind so that the bared end may be positioned over an open barrel 112 of a terminal 110 on the crimping anvil 108. The die 106 then crimps the terminal about the conductor. As ram 20 is raised, a blast of compressed air is passed through hose 66 to pneumatic cylinder 63 to move the cylinder backwardly. This movement frees the cut insulation held between stop 58 and the blades and it is blown away. The grippers and blades are moved apart as the ram is further raised and a fresh terminal is moved on to anvil 108 ready for the next cycle.
