Abstract

1407188 Crimping severed terminals to wires AMP Inc 21 June 1974 [13 July 1973] 27538/74 Headings B3A and B3Q Apparatus for severing channel - shaped electrical terminals 1, joined together by carrier strips 2 in parallel side-by-side relationship from the carrier strips and for crimping the severed terminals to wires W1, W2, W3, Fig. 5, comprises a rotatable conveyer wheel 46 having projections 48 which extend between the terminals on the strip for feeding the strip to a crimping anvil 50 step-by-step, a crimping die assembly 72, Fig. 6, co-operable with the anvil to crimp the terminals to the wires, a device 38 for severing each terminal from the carrier strips, and a wire severing blade 36 arranged to enter a slot 76 in the die assembly to trim the wires prior to the crimping operation, the device 38 and blade 36 being mounted on a terminal guide member 30 which partially surrounds the wheel 46. The guide member and die assembly are exchangeable for use with terminals (1a), Fig. 10 (not shown), of shorter length. A film 11 of insulating material is bonded to the external surface of each terminal and is connected to the carrier strips via a slug (14), Fig. 1 (not shown), of similar material. The wheel 46 is keyed to a support block 45 which is rotatably supported on a shaft 44 which has a knob 52 exterior of the apparatus. A guide sheave 64 is mounted for rotation about an axis parallel to the shaft 44 and co-operates with a guide plate 66 which is pivotally mounted at a point 68. The die assembly 72 is fixed to one end of a die carrier 60 pivoted between plates 20, 22 on a shaft 70. The part 74 of the assembly comprises a female die 78 and wire holder 79 having a wire receiving slot 80. A series of links connect the die carrier to a driving link 96 connected to an operating lever 100. In operation, the guide plate 66 is rotated to expose the sheave 64 and a strip of terminals is fed around the sheave and led around the block 45 by rotation of the knob 52. The wheel is also rotated after raising a pawl 56 from a ratchet wheel 54 to free the wheel. A rib 34 guides the terminals past blades 38 for severing the terminals from the strips. Wires W1, W2 and W3 are inserted into guides 80 of the die assembly 72 and the knob 110 is pushed to turn the lever 100 anti-clockwise and drive the link 96 upwardly. Towards the end of the stroke of the die carrier 60, the cutting blade 36 enters the slot 76 to trim the wires. As the die cavities receive the anvil 50 the terminal on the anvil is crimped to the end portions of the wires. The crimped terminals are ejected from the apparatus by engagement with surfaces 124 of a block 24. The length of the stroke of the die assembly is adjustable by setting a wheel 118 to a desired angular position with a removable screw 120. Shorter terminals may be accommodated by using a guide sheave 64 which has checks (148) having first and second supporting surfaces (100), (152) for supporting terminals of different lengths.
