Abstract
1486833 Making electrical connections; shearing BUNKER RAMO CORP 17 Sept 1974 [1 Oct 1973] 40475/74 Headings B3A and B3W A method of terminating a plurality of freeended, insulated electrical conductors 76 into an electrical connector 24 having opposite sides which support at least one row of aligned insulation piercing contact portions comprises: supporting the connector to expose the aligned contact portions; positioning the conductors in communication with respective contact portions; and sequentially inserting the conductors into the respective contact portion by moving an insertion tool along a line parallel to the connector so that conductor inserting elements of the tool in turn engage an individual conductor and push it into the respective insulationpiercing contact portion of the connector. The connector 24 is located in a slot 22 of the base of a conductor terminating machine and is in abutment with a lock stop 30. A cable 78 is secured in a structure 16 and the conductors 76 are dressed in comb slots 75, whereupon a carriage 14 is moved manually along the length of the connector 24. Cutting edges 60 on wheels 52, 54, trim the ends of the conductors in cooperation with a cutting bar 28 and grooved surfaces 56 on the wheels push the trimmed conductor ends into the slots 75. The insertion tool comprises gears 64, which pivot clear of the conductors on a lever arrangement 70, and as the carriage 14 is returned teeth 66 on the gear enter the slots 75 to force the conductor ends into the insulation piercing contact portions of the connector 24. Alternatively a gear (106), Fig. 3 (not shown), may be fitted to the carriage and its teeth (108) push the ends of the conductors into notches (100) of combs (98) to cut the conductor ends and force them into the conductor as the carriage is advanced. In the preferred embodiment, a carriage 130 is fitted with boots 146, 148 which push the conductor ends into their respective notches, while blades 152 on the boots and cutting bars 116 trim the ends of the conductors 76. Sector gears 156 are mounted on the carriage and they pivot about pin 158 when hook 162 on the gears engage fixed pins 164. Teeth 160 on the sector gears force the cut conductor ends into the insulationpiercing contact portions of the connector 24 as it pivots.
