Abstract

1366626 Jointing by stamping; making electrical connections RELIABLE ELECTRIC CO 12 March 1973 [13 March 1972] 11707/73 Headings B3A and B3Q [Also in Division H2] A channel-shaped connector 2, Fig. 20, on a tape 30 is crimped to wires between a die 102, Fig. 3, and an anvil 154 in a machine comprising a wire holder 128 mounted on the die for inserting the wires into the connector, a shear block 164 movable relatively to the anvil 154 and having cutting edges 182, Fig. 9, for trimming wire ends protruding from the connector against cutting edges 152, Fig. 8, on the die, and cutting edges 186 on the block 164 for serving the tape 30 against edges 188 on the anvil. The die is driven, through a toggle linkage 118, 124, by a pivotally-mounted pneumatic cylinder 108 which includes an internal return spring and an external spring 114. A safety arrangements includes two central valves in series, the supply being diverted to a feed cylinder 87 when a button 208 is depressed by an abutment 206 having a lost-motion connection with a piston, Fig. 10 (not shown), in the cylinder 108. A toothed feed-wheel 70 engaging the strip of connectors is advanced in steps through a one-way clutch by the pivotally-mounted feed cylinder 87; the wheel 70 may also be turned by a hand wheel (82), Fig. 2 (not shown). A spring (85), Fig. 14 (not shown), locates in index slots (76) at each advance of the wheel 70. A polyethylene tape bonded to connectors having phosphor bronze linings 18 on copper or annealed brass shells 4 is fed up to the anvil 154 through an opening 64 in the machine casing. The wires to be joined are each placed in the die 102 and gripped between a pin 136, Fig. 8, and a spring 134 on the wire holder 128. The die is advanced bringing the wires against abutments 180 on the shear block 164 which is deflected against springs 172 in the anvil holder 158, Fig. 9, so as to sever the tape 30 between the shearing edges 186, 188. Further movement of the ram trims the wire ends between the shear edges 152, 182 and effects the crimp. The anvil 154 may be adjusted by a screw 176. Delay in operation of a valve in the housing of cylinder 196 and possibly also the slower action of the feed cylinder 87 allows the die 102 to retract before the next connector is advanced. Projections 250, 252, Fig. 23, may be provided in the die so that if the wires are cut before the tape, pins 250, 252 will engage and move the shear block 164 for severing the tape. The wire ends 270, Fig. 25, may be drawn inwardly of a connector 2 by providing the shear block 164a with forward projections 200, 262.
