Abstract

601,068. Jointing by stamping ; shearing. AIRCRAFT-MARINE PRODUCTS, Inc. July 10, 1945, No. 17537. Convention date, July 15, 1944. [Class 83 (iv)] Apparatus for crimping electrical connectors on to conductors comprises means for feeding a series of connectors successively to a position between a pair of crimping dies and means for moving the dies together to effect the crimping operation. A wheel 68 having sprockets 70, which engage with the holes in the connectors intermittently, feeds a strip 20 of joined connectors up to a stop 38. In this position, 'stationary crimping and shearing dies 22, 40 co-operate respectively with reciprocating dies 24, 42 and serve to crimp the ferrule of the end connector of the strip on to a conductor (not shown), which has been inserted therein either manually or automatically and to sever the connector from the strip by removing a portion of metal from between the two lowermost connectors of the strip. Dies 24, 42 are mounted on a member 26, which is reciprocated from a treadle through rod 34, lever 32 and links 30, 28. Operation of the treadle also serves, through a sprocket 48 and chain 50 to operate a sprocket 52, loosely mounted on a shaft 54 and carrying a pawl 58 which drives a ratchet 56 on each downward movement of the treadle. A locking pawl 60 on the machine frame prevents a reverse movement of the ratchet. A spring connected between the shaft 54 and the ratchet is put under strain on each movement of the ratchet and serves to drive the shaft 54 and feeding-wheel 68 when the lowermost connector has been severed from the strip. The next connector is then fed up to the stop 38. A detent 72 carried by the frame of the machine, co-operates with seats 74 on the wheel 68 to prevent a rearward movement of the wheel and to assist the correct positioning of the strip. The machine may be operated by a pneumatic cylinder instead of a treadle, Specification 585,508 is referred to.
