Abstract

1366059 Securing electrical connectors to panels; angular bending; shearing AMP Inc 16 Jan 1973 [26 Jan 1972] 2141/73 Headings B3A B3E and B3W [Also in Division H2] Apparatus for securing electrical connectors 2, which are initially in the form of a strip 16, to a panel 6 comprises, an anvil 36 for supporting the panel, a mechanism for advancing the strip 16 through an initial shearing station and then a shearing and insertion station, the initial shearing station comprising a shear blade 90 which co-operates with a first shear surface 125 to shear a connector at the junction of its forward end 24 with the strip, and the shearing and insertion station comprising a punch 94 which bends the partially severed connector about a second shear surface 126, the punch having jaws to grip the bent connector as it severs the connector from the strip and inserts it in a hole 4 in the panel 6. On the downward stroke of a ram 70, a pair of punches 94 engage the leading, partially severed connectors 2 bending them over until socket portions of the connectors are located in recesses 98 and secured therein by spring members 100. As the punches 94 continue downwardly the bent connectors are sheared from the strip and driven into the holes 4 in the panel 6, which may be a printed circuit board. At the limit of the stroke of the ram 70, shearing edges (92), Fig. 10 (not shown), on the blade 90 sever the ends 24 of the following pair of connectors. As the ram 70 descends it retracts a feed pawl 112 by a cam mechanism (not shown) and on its upward stroke spring means advances the pawl thereby advancing the strip 16. The scrap strip is fed through a tube 128 to a scrap container.
