Abstract

1351713 Making electrical connection; jointing by stamping; bending; shearing THOMAS & BETTS CORP 30 March 1972 [13 April 1971] 15039/72 Headings B3A B3Q B3W and B3E Terminal forming apparatus comprises first and second pairs of dies 30, 38 and 34, 40, Figs. 4 and 6 respectively, for successively deforming each blank 52 in a strip of substantially flat blanks so as partially to form a terminal for an elongate member 94 and to secure the partially formed terminal about the member, means, e.g. blades 102, 104, Fig, 2, for severing the terminal from the strip, and pawl means 114 for intermittently advancing the strip. Alternatively, the blade 102 may co-operate with an anvil (not shown). The dies 30 and 34 are mounted on a reciprocable rod 24 and the dies 38, 40 are mounted on a fixed support 42. On upward movement of the rod 24, an anvil 46, Fig. 4, is cammed upwardly within the die 30 by the engagement of a pivoted lever 54 with an adjustable stop 67 so as to engage the die 38 and form a blank into a U-shaped cross-section. Simultaneously a previously bent blank is sheared from the strip by the blades 102, 104 and secured to the member 94 by dies 34, 40, the die 40 being vertically adjustable by means of a screw 98. The strip is stored in a coil 52 and fed along a slot 108 by means of a spring biased pawl 114 mounted on the rod 24 and engageable with a fixed cam 130. In another embodiment (Fig. 8, not shown) the die 30 comprises solely an anvil mounted on a pivoted lever.
