Abstract

1364622 Making terminals; angular bending; Shearing AMP Inc 31 Jan 1973 [29 Feb 1972] 4919/73 Headings B3A B3E and B3W Apparatus for folding electrical terminal blanks and inserting the folded blanks in openings H in a support panel P comprises first severing means for partially severing the blank next following the leading blank from a strip ST thereof, but leaving the leading and next following blanks still connected, means for folding the next following blank, second severing means for severing the leading and next following blanks from one another and means for inserting the leading blank into an opening H. The strip ST is fed from a storage spool under a drag plate 22 and is advanced by a feed finger 26, which is operated by a cam mechanism (not shown) actuated by a ram 44. On the downward stroke of the ram, shearing edges 62 on a punch 60 shear legs 7 of the blank next following the leading blank and the feed finger is withdrawn. The punch also bends the body 4 of the blank about its centre line downwardly on either side of an anvil 68, Fig. 9 (not shown). On the upward stroke of the ram the folded blank is advanced into alignment with a punch 54. On the next stroke of the ram, shear edges 55 on the punch shear two carrier portions 8 of the strip ST from the folded blank, the leading portion 8 falling through a shoot 83. The blank is received in a recess (56) in the punch, Fig. 10 (not shown), thereby completely folding it, and it is then driven downwardly into the hole H. The panel P is in position on a locator 84 and the required hole H is engaged by a spring loaded plunger 86, which moves downwardly as the legs 7 of the folded blank enter the hole.
