Abstract

1,156,938. Making eyelets; stamping; metal strip feeds; punching. TEXTRON Inc. 6 Oct., 1966 [15 Oct., 1965], No. 44646/66. Headings B3A, B3Q and B3W. A press for performing on metal blanks consecutive operations, e.g. drawing, piercing, shearing, embossing and threading, comprises a frame 11, two adjacent sets of plungers and dies 15, 16 in the frame and means for transferring the blanks between the work-stations. Blanks may be fed to the press or, as shown, blanked from strip-stock 100 at a station at each end of the press. The plungers of one set operate 180 degrees out of phase with those of the other set, and the blanks proceed in steps towards adjacent inner stations where they are ejected through passages 99 by punches 98 on the inner plungers. The two tool sets may produce different types of articles simultaneously. The press has an upper cam-shaft 60 for effecting downward and return strokes of the plungers 21, 31, and a low cam-shaft 65 for operating ejector pins 61 beneath the dies 20, 30, the shafts being interconnected by a shaft 71 and driven, through belts 54, 59, by an electromotor 50. Lift cams on the cam-shaft 60 act through abutments (84), Fig. 2 (not shown) and coupling rods (85) to raise the plungers 21, 31. Strip feed.-The strip passes transversely through the press at the blanking station of the set of plungers 21 where blanks are punched from one margin of the strip. It then passes through a guide 120 on the top of the frame 11 and again through the press at the other blanking station, where blanks are punched from the other margin of the strip. An idler roll 101a and a feed roll 101b engage the strip at the left-side of the press, the roll 101b being driven intermittently, through a one-way coupling 104, by a rod 105 connected to a crank disc 106 which is driven (Fig. 2) from the crankshaft 65. A similar roll-feed 102 exists on the opposite side of the press. Blanks transferring.-A slide 90, Fig. 4, having end pockets 97 for co-operation with the blanking stations and spring fingers 96 for transferring the blanks, is connected to a further slide 91 which is reciprocated by a cam 93 driven by the shaft 71. Operation.-The blanking punch on one side of the press shears a blank from the strip and forces it into a recess 97 of the feed-slide 90. Movement of the slide transfers the blank to the second station and moves the other recess 97 beneath the blanking punch at the opposite side of the press. The blanks are pushed from the slide by punches on the plungers and stripped from the punches, as they rise, by strippers (not shown) so as to enter the transfer spring-fingers 96. The forming plungers rise in two steps between which they are stationary, Figs. 5a-5c (not shown). Scrap produced in the forming operations is removed through tubes (not shown).
