Abstract
1,161,813. Making ball point pens; pushing through dies; stamping; metal strip feeds. REAL PATENTAUSWERTUNGS ANSTALT. 7 Dec., 1966 [31 May, 1966], No. 54794/66. Headings B3A, B3P, B3Q and B3W. A machine for pressing workpieces from metal strip or wire, particularly for making ball pen points, has a plurality of parallel pressing stations such as 18, 19, through which the workpieces are transferred successively. The machine has a main cam-shaft 22 driven by a motor through a variable diameter pulley 4, belt 40 and electromagnetic clutch 42; an electromagnetic brake 43 is included. Shaft 22 carries a plurality of cams 20 actuating rods 18 carrying the press punches, and is also connected through bevel gearing 45-48 with a parallel shaft 23 carrying cams 21 for driving further tool holders 19. When starting with strip 11, Fig. 7, this is fed by intermittently rotating rollers 62, 63 driven through free-wheel mechanism 61 and linkage 60, 64 by an adjustable eccentric 57, and sheared into strip blanks by blades 65, 66. At the first station, Fig. 2a (not shown), a disc is sheared from the strip blank 11 by annular punch (8) and is simultaneously cupped by punch (6); an ejector (10) is provided for the strip and an ejector rod (12) removes the capsule (13). At the next station, Fig. 2b (not shown), the capsule is elongated in a plurality of stages by pushing through dies (27) against ejector rods (26). At the next station, Fig. 2c (not shown), the closed end of the capsule is punched out by punch (6). At station Fig. 2d<SP>1</SP> (not shown), the resulting hollow tube is formed into a stepped article (13<SP>11</SP>) by pressing through dies (28), (53) and at the final station, Fig. 2e<SP>1</SP> (not shown), the article is pressed to ball point shape (13<SP>111</SP>) in dies (55), (56). Transfer of the workpiece between stations is effected by upper and lower transfer bars (30), (31), Fig. 5b (not shown), having notches (32) to receive the workpieces. These bars are maintained parallel to each other and are actuated through linkage by cam grooves 78<SP>1</SP>, 79<SP>1</SP> in shaft 22 so as to open and close in a vertical direction (87) and also perform a horizontal transfer movement (77). A spring-loaded rod (96), Fig. 3a (not shown), is arranged to engage in a cavity (97) in the lower transfer bar and to stop the machine if it is not seated properly. When starting from wire, this is drawn through straightening rolls (67)-(69), Fig. 9 (not shown), by the feed rollers 62, 63 and is pressed against an adjustable stop 70 where it is sheared by a reciprocating cutter (72), Fig. 10 (not shown), actuated by an axial cam 74. The sheared-off wire is then extruded into a capsule and passed through pressing stations 2b-2e.
