Abstract

1373631 Shearing; Fixing nuts in sheets MACLEAN-FOGG LOCK NUT CO 14 Oct 1971 [23 Oct 1970] 47877/71 Headings B3W and B3H Apparatus for feeding clinch nuts to a workpiece, the clinch nuts being in the form of a strip comprising a plurality of aligned nuts 20, Fig. 6, secured together by relatively thin connecting means 33, 34, holding adjacent nuts in spaced relation to one another, the apparatus comprising a plunger 31, Fig. 10, reciprocable in a first opening in a housing, a second opening in the housing shaped to receive the strip and intersecting the first opening, means 65 for intermittently advancing the strip through the second opening towards the first opening, shear means operated by the plunger to shear a nut from the strip and move the sheared nut through the first opening, and means mechanically connected to the plunger for intermittently advancing the strip through the second opening in timed relation to the movement of the plunger. With the apparatus in the position shown in Fig. 10, the strip of nuts 43 is advanced by an operator into contact with surface 87 of drive link 73 and the workpiece 21 is located under punch 31. The punch 31 is then lowered by a ram against the resistance of spring 54 and causes roller 76, mounted on the drive link 73, to ride along cam surface 79, Fig. 51. The drive link thus moves to the left as seen in Figs. 10 and 15, and through rocker arm 66, imparts this movement, at an amplified rate to part 65. The pawl drops into an opening 37, Fig. 6, between adjacent nuts in the strip 43 and advances the strip into the apparatus. As roller 76 leaves cam surface 79 and moves on to vertical surface 83 of the punch 31, forward movement of the strip ceases. Continued downward movement of the punch shears the end nut from the strip at the mid point of connecting flanges 33, 34 and pushes the severed nut through the workpiece 21. The nut and workpiece are then clinched together by the punch 31 and die 25. On return movement of the punch, a pin 81 mounted on drive link 73 moves along cam surface 80 of the punch, thus moving drive link 73 to the right, as seen in Fig. 15, taking pawl 65 with it through the operation or rocker arm 66. The strip nuts are held against backward movement by a finger spring 59.
