Abstract

1368695 Riveting; shearing E H B O E E VON GRAEVE 31 May 1972 [8 June 1971] 25430/72 Headings B3U and B3W A method of setting a contact 74, Fig. 4, in a support 72 comprises feeding a wire 70 to a severing station, severing a predetermined length of the wire, pushing the severed length into the support, and riveting the severed length to the support, the operations of feeding, severing and pushing the wire being controlled sequentially by cams 41-43 during each cycle of a press 44, 45. In operation the plate 44 of the press is moved upwardly to the position shown in Fig. 1, the upward movement disengaging cam 41 from roller 24 to enable a slide 23 and consequently a shear blade 21 to move to the right, under the action of a spring 27, until orifice 25 of the blade 21 is aligned with an orifice (28) in shear blade 22. Following the disengagement of cam 41 from roller 24, the cam 42 leaves a roller 15 to allow a slide 11 to move to the left under the action of spring 12 and simultaneously feed a predetermined length of wire into the orifice 25 of blade 21. The plate 44 is then moved downwardly so that the cam 42 engages the roller 15 to push the slide 11 to the right and thereby load the wire supply for a new cycle. The cam 41 then engages the roller 24 to push the blade 21 to the left to shear the previously fed wire length and feed it to a position opposite the orifice 71 of the support. The cam 43 then pivots a lever 31 so as to move a push member 33, 34 upwardly to insert the sheared length into the support. On upward movement of the plate 44, the support is removed from the press to a riveting device where the sheared length is riveted to the support. A plurality of wire lengths may be fed to a support and the sheared lengths of wire can punch their own holes.
