Abstract

1,043,070. Attaching pronged fasteners. MORLEY CO. June 24, 1965 [June 26, 1964], No. 26788/65. Heading B4C. An apparatus for attaching handles B, connected by neck portions C, to a strip S of material, such as the ticking of a mattress, comprises a guide 33 for feeding the handles to an attaching station, a pair of dies 28, 8, and 29, 9 mounted respectively, on supports 32, 17 movable by means of a ram 14, 16 towards each other in order to attach the handle to the sheet and cutters 39, 44 mounted on the lower support 17 for severing the neck portions C between the foremost handle and the next succeeding handle during such movement. The upper support 32 is connected to the piston 16 of the ram and is guided by spindles 21, 22 slidable in lugs 13 on the ram cylinder 14. The lower support 17 is loaded away from the upper support by springs 26. In operation, the connected handles fall under gravity through the guide 33 so that the foremost handle abuts a stop 34 and its ends rest on movable supports 36, 37. Backing plates 12 for the pronged fasteners already located in the handle are fed into the dies 8, 9 by means fully described in Specification 932,785. The upper support 32 is then moved downwardly so that the lower support contacts the strip S and further movement brings the dies 28, 29 into contact with the handle so that the prongs are forced through the strip and bent over on the dies 8, 9. During this movement the foremost handle is severed from the remaining handles by means of the cutters 41.
