1324166 Attaching fasteners THOMAS WALKER Ltd 12 Oct 1970 [11 Oct 1969] 50045/69 Heading B4C A device for securing two spaced pronged dress fasteners comprises a pair of mirror image press units, each having an upper and a lower die, the respective dies being offset from the centre line of each unit whereby the units may be placed side by side to secure fasteners at a spacing of less than the width of a unit. The device may include means for feeding the fasteners into the holder from a magazine and associated fastener back plate feed means. Each unit comprises a ram 28 having a combined die and holder 27 pivoted on it to be swung by a fixed pin 74 between a loading position, Fig. 5, and a clenching position, Fig. 6. The lowest fastener is fed by an injector 128 between jaws 67, Fig. 8, on the holder 27, the injector being reciprocated by pneumatic means 102, 104 engaging a cam plate 114 connected to the injector by a rod 119. Back plates 15 are fed off the base of a stack in a magazine 31 by a feed slide 88 reciprocated by the means 102, 104, the slide including a relatively moveable carrier blade 90. The lower die comprises a cantilevered mandrel 40 over which the waist band is slid after the slide 88 has engaged it and the carrier plate 90 advanced over its upper surface to place a back plate in the die recess 33, Fig. 9. A spring loaded plunger 106 advances with the plate 90 to ensure that the back plate is pushed fully into the recess. During the clenching operation, the mandrel is supported by a "dolly ' 84 slideable vertically in a reciprocable carrier 80 and raised by a cam surface 86 as it aligns with the mandrel. In alternative arrangements (not shown), the fastener feeding arrangements may be omitted and the fasteners be hand fed. The lower die may be carried directly on the bed plate for a "flat bed" press arrangement.
