Abstract

932,785. Attaching pronged fasteners. MORLEY CO. May 23, 1962 [June 13, 1961], No. 19827/62. Class 89 (3). [Also in Group XXV] A machine for attaching handles 42, having pre-attached pronged fasteners 44, to a strip of material 16, such as the side of a mattress, comprises a frame 10, having a bed 14, a reciprocatory head 20 provided with driving dies 22, means 65, including fastener closing dies 60, for positioning the fasteners, and feed means 40 for feeding the handles between the driving and closing dies. The head 20 is guided in the frame 10 and driven via a toggle linkage 24 by means of a ram 32 supported on a bracket 34. The closing dies 60 are provided in discs 65 which are rotated on the upward stroke of the head by means of a ratchet-gear device driven by a ram 70; locking rings 62, Fig. II, are fed into each empty die via tubes 67. The feed means 40 for the handles is in the form of a guideway into which handles are inserted and fall by gravity to a position under the dies 22 where they are supported on the tapered edges of spring-loaded levers 52. In operation, upon actuation of a valve 86 in one direction, compressed air is fed to the ram 32 so as to drive the head downwardly and thereby force the prongs through the strip 16 and into contact with the closing die, the prongs then being folded over the locking ring 62; during this operation, the ram 70 is operated in sucn a direction as not to rotate the discs 65. Upon actuation of the valve in another direction, compressed air is fed to the opposite ends of the rams 32, 70 thereby, respectively, returning the head 20 and indexing both discs around so that locking rings are located under the dies 22 in readiness for the next operation. Air jets 88 are provided which, in addition to the gravitational force, move the handles under the dies. Air jets are also provided for ejecting from the closing dies 60 any damaged locking rings.
