Apparatus for joining superposed elements comprises means for feeding a metal strip across the top of a die, means for severing the end portion, means for locating the elements above the severed strip and then pushing them down into the die thereby forming the strip into an open clamp about the elements and means for closing the clamp about the elements. Through a machine frame 1 carrying a die 2 passes a reciprocable rod 9 to which is secured a punch 15 co-operating with the die. Also secured to the rod is a latch 17 affording a lost-motion drive from the rod to a vertically movable carriage 10 carrying a cutter 12 and cheeks 11 which embrace the die and are slotted as at 13 to receive the elements to be joined, namely a part 22 of a mattress frame and a part 23 of a wire spring. In operation a metal strip 7 is fed through a guide 5 by a device 6 so that the end rests across the die 2. The elements 22 and 23 are then placed in the slots 13 and the rod 9 moved down so that the cutter 12 co-operates with the edge of the die to sever the end 7<SP>1</SP> of the strip 7, Fig. 3, and the downward movement of the elements 22 and 23 carried by the cheeks 11 forces the strip 7<SP>1</SP> into the die, the ends of the strip being thereby bent up to form an open clamp as in Fig. 4. A trip device 24 then releases the latch 17 from the carriage 10 but the rod 9 continues to descend until the punch 15 has closed the ends of the strip as shown in Fig. 5. On the upward movement of the rod, the carriage 10 is raised and again released and the device 6 feeds the strip 7 forward ready for another operation.
