[Also in Division B8] Apparatus for punching a hole in sheet material such as paper, and reinforcing the material in a region around the hole comprises means S, Fig. 1, for clamping together a length of adhesive reinforcing tape C and the material T over a region within which a hole is to be punched, means including a punch P to punch a hole through the material and the tape adhered thereto and a guillotine F for cutting the tape at the edge of the region, means to withdraw the punch and guillotine and to unclamp the reinforced sheet material, and means to advance a second length of tape to a position to be clamped in a subsequent punching and reinforcing operation. During the initial downward movement of the punch P, guillotine F and clamp S, the tape C and material T are pressed together and against a die plate A by the spring-pressed clamp. A guide G is then moved away from the punch assembly to unroll a length of tape from the roll R. Further downward movement of the punch and guillotine causes the punch to cooperate with a recess O to form a hole in the tape and sheet and the guillotine to cut the tape at the edge of the sheet. The punch; guillotine and clamp are raised and the guide G, which forms the tape with a curve transversely of its length so as to be stiff and selfsupporting, is advanced to position a new piece of tape beneath the clamp in preparation for the next operation. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, the punch is mounted in guides GP and may be connected by a control bar U to one or more similar punches. The roll R of tape C is mounted on a plate B and is movable about a pivot EE<SP>1</SP> by the bar U during its downward movement to unroll tape from the roll R while its end is held by the clamp S. A forked piece may be mounted on the platform A for retaining the plate B in a retracted position when reinforcement of the sheet is not desired.
