Abstract
The device disclosed provides a punch and die set in which accurate locating guides are provided to match the punch to the die perfectly to avoid damaging the cutting edges. The shearing operation on soft rubber requires an absolute match between punch and die without the clearance usually used in other forms of trimming dies. This has especial utility in shearing operations on soft rubber and the like.

SHEET 3 OF 3 gvwa/wlm PETER A. TRAPHAGEN KAROL T DYCZYNSKI DIE SET STATEMENT OF INVENTION This invention relates to punch and die sets and, more particularly, to punch and die sets with an improved aligning means especially adapted to be used in punching such soft resilient material as soft rubber.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved punch and die set.
Another object of the invention is to provide a punch and die set that is automatically aligned when placed in operating position.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a side view of the die set according to the invention.
FIG. 2 is a front view of the die set.
FIG. 3 is a top view of the die block.
FIG. 4 is a front view of the die support block.
FIG. 5 is a top view of the punch anddie set.
FIG. 6 is a view similar to FIG. 1 of the die set with certain other parts added.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Now with more particular reference to the drawings, the die holder 10 is shown with the punch holder 11 supported above it. The die holder 10 may be supported on the anvil of a punch press or the like and the punch holder 11 may be attached to the ram of the punch press by means of the member 27. The punch holder 11 will normally have a punch 19 fixed to it and the die block which is supported on a retractable slide 12 is slidably supported on the die holder 10 by gibs 14 which engage grooves 26 in the bottom surface of the retractable slide 12. The retractable slide 12 engages the microswitch which is fixed to the rear end of the die holder 10 and which may be connected to the actuating mechanism of the press so that the press cannot be actuated until the slide is in engagement with the die holder 10.
The slide 12 will have the die 28 supported on the slide 12 which will move under the punch 19 which has protrusions 29 and 30 fixed to it which are adapted to enter similar recesses in the die. The advantages and versatility of the slide retracting die sets is demonstrated when the retracted slide feeds the stock for subsequent operations without aid from a stock feeder.
One of the most difficult materials to punch in a trimming die is soft rubber materials. The retracting slide is important because the formed rubber has to be placed accurately into the die cavity and visual inspection is necessary. Razor sharp cutting edges are also important since the rubber stretches and the part is damaged if the cutting edges are not extremely sharp.
The punch is accurately matched to the die by means of the bushings 22 which have an upper part 30 which has a cylindrical bore 13 therein. The bushings have the lower part 32 which has a half-cylindrical bore 33 which is a continuation of the bore 31. The two integral parts 31 and 32 of the bushing are fixed to punch holder 11. The half cylindrical part 32 of the bushings extends down below the upper cylindrical part 31 of the posts 121 when the ram of the press is in the up position. Thus the top of the post can move under the end of the upper handle 9 rearward until the posts I2 seat in the half cylindrical surface 33 and the stop 13 engages the front of the die holder,
the punches 28 and 30 will be in exact alignment with the corresponding openings in the die 18. Thus when the operator grasps handle 20 and moves block 12 to bring stop 13 against the front of the die holder, the catch 5 engages the stock and moves it together with the main slide 12 to the initial operating position. The block will, at this point, engage the microswitch 25 so that the press can operate and punch a hole in the material 35.
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
