MACHINE FOR PUNCHTNG AND AFFIXING CHARACTERS AND THE LIKE OF l APER.
7 Specification of Letters Patent.
Paloma Aug. 8, 1916.
Application filed March 28, 1914. Serial No. 828,054.
- new and useful Improvements in Machines for Punching and Ailixing Characters and the like of Paper, of whi h the following is a specification.
The objectof this invention is to provide a simple an(l inexpensive manually operated apparatus focpunrhing characters and-the like out of paper and-at the same time affixing them to a backing of cardboard without theuse of an adhesive, the apparatus being thus suitable for the production of showeards. advertisements 'and the like. which can be prepared without skilled labor by the persons having occasion to use the same;
Two embodiments of the invention are shown in the accon'ipanying drawings, in Figures 1 to 4 and Fig. 5 respectively.
Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation, and ,Fig. anelevation showing the operative parts in a different position. Fig. 3 is an end view of the machine, and Fig. 4 a'plan view.
.Fig. 5 is a side elevation, partly broken away.
.llefcrring in the firstinstance to the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 4, r1 designates a flanged foot supporting one end of a bed plate 1/, the opposite ,end of the latter being supported by a foot j. ()n the bed plate I; there is a sliding plate or carriage c. which serves as an anvil and has side plates or flanges (1 whereby it is engaged with the bed plate. These plates 0. are not rigidly fixed to the anvil, but the shanks of studs (2 on the anvil pass through vertical slots f in the plates (i, so that the latter have limited vertical movement, the hlates (I, being retained in connection with the anvil by the heads 0 of the studs. The bottom edges of the plates (1 are in part inclined. as shown at d, and to the sides of the bed plate [1 are fixed wedge shaped abutments 9' arranged so that by co-action with the said inclined parts they lift the. plates (J when the anvil is moved to the position shown in Fig. 2. Theplates (I support. near their upper edges, the punch II, or a set of punches. For this purpose they have horizontal slots (F, in which rest the ends of horizontal cross ha rs 2' having collars I. abutting against the inner faces of the plates 11. On to the ends ofthe cross bars i, which project th rough the slots d are screwed nuts or. By tightening up the latter the cross bars can be fixed in selei-ted positions in the slots 11?. 'hen they have been adjusted and fixed the punch his placed thereon. In the example illustrated there ar four cross ars, adapted to support two punches. 'hcn the anvil c is in the position shown in Fig. 2, tlie punch is raised by the plates (1 so that asheet of card-board .r: and a sheet of paper jflying on said cardboardcan conveniently be laid V on the anvil under the punch.
The anvil has a handle 1;, whereby'it can be pushed under a press plate 2: supported above the opposite end of the bed. \Vhenthe anvil is so moved the plates (1, with the/punch, drop into a position in'which the. punclr rests on the paper and cardboard and holds the same firmly on the anvil, the punch itself l viu"" evenly uuderthe press plate )1.- has a shank n, whereby it isri The latter ally gu-i'd ed in a yoke r The press [date is depressed by means of a ram 1) actuated y a. crank o.
are. however, provided withiuelined slots II, engaged with abutmeuts .e pro ecting from the sides of the. bed plate. 'l'hese abut nieuts a serve to pull. the plates downward when the anv l ismoved toward the Weiss. The wress is broken awav in Fi". 3. i r,
The operation of the machine will he readily umlerstoml from the. above deseription of the parts. Inord r to produce a show-card or advertiseim'nt the anvil is drawn into the position in which it is shown in Fig. 2. and punches for cutting out the characters required are placed upon the raised punch holders of the plates or flanges (I. Then a piece. of eanlboa'rd is laid upon the surface of the anvil under the punches, and on this cardboard a sheet of paper of a different color. The anvil is then pushed under the press, this movement causing the punches to drop onto the surface of the pa.-
per. The press is then actuated, so thatihe boa rd punches are caused to cut the characters out of the paper, at the same time making slight depressions in the surface of the cardin which, the characters rema'i'u firmly fixed; The anvil is then withdrawn, the punches being at the same time automatically raised, so that the cardboard and paper can be taker-.oll' the anvil, The sheet of paper out of which the characters have beencut can then be removed from the cardboard, and the show-cardor advertisement is ready for use.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent of'the United States is 1.;In a machine for the purpose set forth the combination of a press, a bed, a manually reciprocatablc anvil movable on said bed to and from said press, a movable punch support carried by said anvil, and means whereby said punch support is automatically raised from said anvil by the movement of the latter from said press.
2. In a machine for the purpose set forth the combination of a press, a bed, a manually reciprocatable anvil movable on said bed to and from said press,a movable punch support carried by said anvil, and abutmeats fixed to said bed whereby said punch support is automatically raised from said .mvil in the course of the movement of the letter from said. press.
3. In a machine for thepurpose set forth the combination of a press, a bed, a manu-' ally :cciprocatable anvil movable on said bed to and from said press, a movable punch support carried by said anvil, and abutments fixcd'to said bed, whereby said punch support is automatically raised and lowered on said anvi'l in the course of the move.
respectively.
4. In a machine for the purpose set forth the combination of a press, a-bed, a manually reciprocatable anvil movable. on said bed to and from said press, vertically movable vertical plates engaged with the Sides of said anvil andv having horizontal slots nesses:
