997,555. Attaching pronged fasteners. STAPLES & SON Ltd. March 17, 1964 [Jan. 8, 1963], No. 918/63. Heading B4C. An apparatus for attaching pronged fasteners to the waist bands of garments comprises a holder for two pronged fasteners and including an element 16 connected to the ram 13 of the press and an element 17 carrying the fastener supports 25, the two elements being pivoted so as to ensure that not more than half of the total clenching load is applied to the die at the free end of a mandrel 10. The two elements 16, 17 are connected by a pivot-pin 18, a spring 23 being provided in order to urge downwardly the fastener support 25 adjacent the supported end of the mandrel; a block of resilient material 24 is interposed between the elements in order to provide a cushion effect. In operation, pronged fasteners 19, 20 are fitted over spring- loaded levers 31 on the supports 25 and cooperating back-plates 36 are placed in dies 21, 22 in the mandrel. The waist-band is then slipped over the mandrel and the holder moved downwardly by a pedal-and-spring mechanism or by power-operated means, the fastener 20 engaging the die 22 before the fastener 19 engages its die 21. The plunger head and the mandrel may be both pivotable about a vertical axis.
