1301199 Attaching fasteners THOMAS WALKER Ltd 19 April 1971 [26 March 1970 11 April 1970] 14938/70 and 17312/70 Heading B4C A clenching machine for attaching pronged fasteners to garment material comprises at least one pair of respectively co-operable lower and upper dies 14, 18, one formed to support a pronged fastener member, Fig. 4 (not shown), and the other including anvil surfaces 40 for bending the prongs, and a pair of opposed jaws 12, 13, movable simultaneously by a common operating mechanism to cause the dies 14, 18 to effect a clenching operation. The or each upper die 18 includes a permanent magnet core 43 set in a block 42, e.g. of aluminium, steel side plates 44 defining shoulders 45 for supporting the fastener member. A die carrier 48 is pivotable on a shaft 15 of the upper jaw 12 between operative (Fig. 3) and inoperative (Fig. 1) positions by means of a lever 50 bearing a handle 51, a spring (54), Fig. 2 (not shown), urging the lever 50 towards the inoperative die position. For operation the lever 50 is positioned manually and a lever (80) is actuated, so that a trunnion-supported air pressure cylinder 20 of the operating mechanism acts through levers 24, 24<SP>1</SP> to urge the jaw members 12, 13 towards each other in guides 112, 113. A control rod 59 governed by a pin 58 running in guide means 56 of the lever 50 is connected to means in the air cylinder supply circuit for preventing actuation of the operating mechanism with the die or dies 18 out of operative position. Safety means to ensure that both hands of the operator are used during clenching is also provided.
