MACHINE FOR FIXING HINGES PROVIDED WITH FASTENING-POINTS.

Be it known that I, EMIL RIEBEL, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of 94 Bleichstrasse, Pforzheim, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Fixing Hinges Provided with Fastening-Points, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for object a machine for fixing to divided containers, boxes or the like hinges of the kind which are made in long continuous strips provided with fastening points.
The essential feature of my invention consists in the combination with the stamp or plunger for fixing and movably holding the hinge, and which also effects the cutting and pressing of the same, of an anvil fitted with adjusting devices for the parts of the container, box or the like. These adjusting devices are important in as much as the hinges require to be fixed in pre-determineol positions and in some instances must leave suflicient space between the adjacent edges of the divided container for the application of special covering material such as paper, leather, plush or the like. It is also important to provide the movable holder of the stamp, for holding the hinge, with clamping means which will prevent unintentional displacement of the hinge-strip before cutting and fixing a hinge. As the various kinds of containers require difierent lengths of hinges, which, however are to be fixed with one and the same machine, it is par ticularly important to make the stamp, fitted with the hinge-holder, as also the anvil, changeable.
In order to prevent splitting when wooden boxes are hinged together, I have adopted means for limiting the down-stroke of the' tion of the upper portion of the machine,

To the frame 1 of the machine is pivoted at 1 a foot-lever 2 which with its upper end 2 actuates the rod 3 carrying the plunger or stamp 4. The latter serves as a cut ting and pressing device, said stamp engaging by means of a pin 5 in a corresponding recess at the lower end of the rod 3,'a

screw 6 being provided for use in retaining the stamp 4. The latter is provided with a sliding gage-box 7 which has a transverse pin 8 engaged in a slot 9 of the stamp. (Figs. 3 and 4.).
The gage-box 7 carries a supporting bearing 10 for the hinge-strip 11. For the latter there is further provided a clamping device 12, controlled by a spring 12 The anvil 13 engages with a pin 14 in the baseblock 15 on the frame 1 and a screw 16 retains the anvil in position.
17 denotes a plate or the like removably secured in the anvil, for use in determining the distance between the parts of the container 18. An adjustable stop 19 is provided for correctly setting the parts of the container 18 in an endwise direction.
A set screw 20 secured in the head of the vertical arm of the frame 1 forms a stop for the head 21 of the rod 8 which moves the stamp 4 up and down so that the latter can be adjusted in its lower position for the required distance from the anvil 18.
The frame 1 carries a pivoted fork 22 fitted with depending arms 23 which have open slots 24. The said arms are furnished with adjustable stops 25 fixed by means of winged nuts 26. To the fork 22 is secured a rod 27 which is screw-threaded at its up-' per end and is fitted with a nut 28.
When limiting the down-stroke of the stamp 4 by adjusting the set screw 20, it will be necessary to also adjust the gagebox 7 in a corresponding manner so as to prevent same from striking too soonthe parts of a wooden container and cause the latter to split, or to prevent the stamp from projecting through the gage-box too soon. The adjustment is effected by screwing the nut 28 and thus cause the fork 22 with its links 23 to move up or down.
When lifting the stamp 4, the gage-box 7 will by its own weight move down on the stamp. To prevent the gage-box 7 from sticking while in its raised position, and thereby cause the hinge-strip to be lifted by means of the support 10 too far, I have provided the above mentioned stops 25 against which the pin 8 strikes, thus arresting the upward movement of the gageboX 7 before the stamp has reached its uppermost position.
The machine operates in the following manner: The stop 19 is adjusted so as to suit the length of the partsof the container. and
a plate or strip 17 is inserted in the anvil 13.
Hereupon the stamp 4 is depressed through the intervention of the foot-lever 2. This brings first, the gage-box 7 onto the container parts 18. At the further downward motion of the stamp 4, the same cuts off a length of the properly inserted hinge-strip 11 and then forces the points thereof into the parts of the container.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a machine of the kind described in combination, a machine frame, a stamp for cutting and fixing the hinges, means for moving said stamp, a holder for the hinge strip movably attached to said stamp, a spring cont-rolled clamping device for the hinge strip arranged on said movable holder, an anvil for the parts of the container to be connected, said anvil being detachably arranged in said machine frame, and a distance plate detachably fixed to said anvil, substantially as set forth.
2. In a machine of the kind described in combination, a machine frame, a vertically guided stamp for cutting and fixing the hinges arranged in said machine frame, means for moving said stamp, and means for limiting the down-stroke of said stamp, a gage-box slidable on said stamp, means for adjusting the upward and downward movement of said gage-box, a holder for the hinge-strip fixed to said gage box, a springgoverned clamping device for the lungestrip arranged on said gage-box, an anvil for supporting the parts of the container to be connected, said anvil being detachably arranged in said machine frame, and a distance-plate detachably fixed to said anvil, substantially as set forth.

In a machine of the kind described in combination, a machine frame, a stamp-rod vertically guided in said machine frame, a stamp adapted to cut the hinges and to fix same to a container, said stamp being detachably fixed to said stamp-rod, means for moving said stamp-rod, a set screw provided on said machine frame and adapted to limit the down-stroke of said stamp, a gage box slidable on said stamp, means for adjusting the upward and downward movement of said gage-box, a lateral projection on the latter adapted to guide the hinge-strip, and a spring-governed clamping device adapted to hold the hinge-strip in position, an anvil for supporting the parts of the container to be connected, said anvil being detachably arranged in said machine frame, and a distance-plate detachably fixed to said anvil, substantially as set forth.

In a machine of the kind described in combination, a machine frame, a stamp-rod vertically guided in said machine frame, a stamp adapted to cut the hinges and to fix same to a container said stamp being detachably fixed to said stamp-rod, a foot lever for moving the latter and journaledin said machine-frame, a set screw provided on said machine-frame and adapted to limit the down-stroke of said. stamp, a gage box slidable on said stamp, a pin on said gage-box engaging a vertical slot in said stamp, a forked lever linked to said machine-frame, a screw-spindle fixed to said forked lever and adapted to adjust the position of said forked lever, two depending arms linked to said forked lever and having their lowerends slotted, the above said pin in said gagebox engaging said slots, stops adjustably fixed to said depending arms and adapted to witnesses.
