SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,882, dated April 1%, 1885.
Appliration filed January To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at .Vorcester, in the county of IVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ire-Feeding Mechanism; and I declare the following to be a description of my said invention, sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my present invention is to produce a more perfect and desirable apparatus for automatically feeding wire intermittently to a given distance, as in machines for setting card-teeth and for other purposes, and to afford facilities for the accurate adjustment of the feed-movement; also, to provide a yielding connection between the movable block and operating-lever, so that the block may have positive stops, while said lever may be actuated positively in both directions by its driving-cam. These objects I attain by the mechanism constructed as shown and described, the particular features of impro vement claimed being hereinafter definitely specified.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a wire-feeding mechanism embracing my improvements. Fig. 2 is a part side view, part section, at line as, showing the mechanism. Fig. 3 is an end view of the guide-frame. Fig. 4 shows the back of the jaw-pressure spring.
In reference to parts, A indicates the frame of the machine. B indicates the stationary jaw-block, and C the movable block or head through which the wire \V passes. Said blocks 13 and 0 are respectively provided with grip pins or jaws b b and c c for holding the wire at proper intervals of action. The pins Z) and c are adj ustable, but are rigidly held at working position bybinding-screws a, while the jaws or pins 7) and c are free to move in and out in the action of the mechanism, springss being provided, if desired, for forcing them outward or away from the wire \V when released by the pressers.

0 indicates a stud or hunter fixed in the forward end of the block 0 to act as a stop for the forward movement against the block B, which latter is rigid upon the frame A. The block O works back and forth on the guide E between the limit of the stops 0 and D. The lever F, by which the block 0 is moved, is fulcrumed atf, and is operated by the grooved cam G being positively actuated in both directions. transversely-located stud, at, one end of which rests against the raised portion of the block 0, while the other end rests against a flat spring or yielding plate, H, fixed on the lever F, as indicated. The manner of connecting the lever with the block is a feature of my invention. A spring, (1 is arranged in connection with the block 0 and lever F for pressing said lever forward and maintaining proper relation between said parts.
I indicates a spring-plate secured at its end i to the frame, and located parallel with the guide E at such distance from the block as will accommodate the jaw grip-pin 0, so that the latter will, by said spring-plate I, be forced inward firmly against the wire IN when the plate I is at normal position. A lever-head, J, is hinged to the end of the spring I, one end of which head is in position to act on the grip-pin I), while the other is connected with a slide-rod, K, that is operated by a cam, L, on the drive-shaft M, as illustrated. The operation of the cam L drawing back the rod K swings the end of the head J against the grippin 1), closing b b, so as to hold the wire in the block B, and at the same time by the leverage of said head J overcomes the spring of the plate I and lifts it from the grippin 0, thus opening a c and releasing the wire in the block 0. Thus, while one grip or jaw is closed the other is opened, and vice versa. The excess of1novement or overthrow of the lever F on its 'forward stroke is relieved by the yielding of the spring H back of stud m, and on the backward stroke by the yielding of the spring 0 In the operation the method of feeding forward the wire is substantially similar to the method commonly heretofore employedviz.-, thejaws b b grip and hold the wire while the block 0 moves backward, and the jaws c c grip and hold the Wire, carrying it forward with the forward movement of said-block, one pair of jaws being closed on the wire when the other is relieved, as will be readily understood.
Mechanism for feeding wire is quite common in which a stationary block having grip devices and a reciprocating block having grip devices and operated by a swinging lever and cam are employed. It will therefore be under'stood thatI donot herein make claim,broadly, to such features, my invention comprising the improved constructions and arrangements specified, illustrated, and defined.
What I claim as of my invention, and desire to secure by patent, is
1. The combination, in a wire-feeding mech anism, of the block 0, with stops for limiting its movement in both directions, the operating-lever F, attached to said block by a yielded for positively imparting motion to said lever in bot-h directions and in excess of the movement of the feed-block, as hereinbefore set forth.
2. The combination, with the movable jawblock 0., in a wire-feeding device, of the operating-lever F, provided with the spring H, the stud m, the stops D and O and the spring 0 substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with the grip pins or jaws b and c, of the spring-plate I, attached to the frame at t, the lever-head J, hinged to said spring'plate, the rod K, and cam L, as shown and described.
4. In combination,- as shown, the stationary jaw-block B, having grip-pins b b, the mova' blejaw-blook G,having grip-pins cc,the guiderod E, the lever F, having the spring Hand stud m, the spring 0 the adjustable stop D, the spring-plate I, with lever-head J, the connection-rod K, the grooved lever-operating cam G, and rod-operating cam L on shaft M, said parts constructed as herein described.
