SAMUEL UPTON, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE CONSOLIDATED FASTENER COMPANY, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
FEED MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,952, dated January 6, 1903.
Application filed April 30, 1902 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL UPTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Feed Mechanisms, of which the following is a full specification.
My invention relates to power-presses or other machines in which one or more operations are performed upon astrip of metal or other material passing through the machine; and it consists in a new and improved mechanism whereby the said stripof metal or other material is by the movement of the machine itself intermittently fed through the machine, thereby allowing the operation or operations to be performed upon new portions of the strip of material which are successively and regularly presented to the tool or tools.
I have shown my feed mechanism as applied to a power-press; but it is clearly adaptable as well to any machine Where an intermittent feed is required.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein likeletters represent like parts, Fig ure 1 is a front elevation of a power-press provided with my improved feed mechanism. Fig. 2 is the same, showing the parts in a different position. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section taken through the feed mechanism on the line 3 3, Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A is the frame of a powerpress, and B the reciprocating plunger of same.
C is a tool or punch carried by the plunger B and cooperating with a suitable stationary die D in order to stamp or punch the strip of material E, which is fed between the punch and die by means of my improved feed mechanism, as hereinafter described.
My feed mechanism consists of a swinging pendulum-lever F, pivoted to the frame of the machine at f and carrying at its lower end the grip G, which as the lever F swings toward andaway from the punch and die alternately releases and grips the material E. The grip G consists of the shoes F and H, mounted, respectively, on the angular ends of the pendulum-lever F, and the bracket H, which is attached by the bolts f to the back Serial No. 105,391. (No model.)
of the lever F, as shown in Fig. 3. The bolts f pass through longitudinal slots 72. k in the bracket I-I, so that it may slide upon the back "of the lever F in order to open or close the grip G. The bracket H is constantly. urged upward to open the grip by the spiral spring :I, while it is at the proper time forced downward in order to close the grip by means of the cam J, pivoted to the lever F and acting on the upper end of the bracket H, as shown by the dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2. The cam J has the arm j, which engages with the dog K, adjustably attached to the plunger of the machine and acting upon it as the plunger rises. The arm j also engages with the lever L, pivoted to the frame A at l and actuated as the plunger descends by the bolt b, attached to the plunger. The whole pendulumlever F is oscillated in one direction by the spring M at its upper end and in the other cillating cam J. The latch P engages with the adjustable stop R, attached to the frame of the machine.
The action of my improved feed is as follows: As the plunger descends, the parts beingin the position as shownin Fig. 1, the material is firmly held by the grip G, the lever F being held by the latch P against the action of the spring M. Just as the plunger nears its lowest position and the tools G and D are about to act on the material the bolt 6 strikes the lever L, which in turn engages with the armj of the cam J, throwing the cam J out of engagement with the bracket H and allowing the bracket H to be lifted by the spring I, and thus releasing the grip G. As the cam is still further rotated by the leverL its hook j engages with the link Q, lifting the latch P from the stop B. As the material E is by this time firmly gripped by the tools 0 and D and as the grip G is released, as already described, when the latch P is released the pendulum-lever is allowed to swing over by the action of the spring M, the grip G sliding over the material E. As the plunger B ascends the dog K first engages with the armj of the cam J, throwing it into engagement with the bracket H and clamping the grip G firmly onto the stock E. As the plunger further ascends the dog N strikes the roller 0 on the lever F, forcing it over against the action of the spring M and carrying the material with it. When the plunger has reached its highest position and the lever F its maximum throw, the latch P drops over the stop R, and the feed mechanism is in position for another stroke, as already described.
I preferably provide the adjustable stops S and T, which positively limit the swing of the pendulum in each direction, and by suitably adjusting these stops, as well as the stop R, dogs N and K, and bolt I), my mechanism can be adjusted accurately to feed the material any desired distance with each stroke of the machine. By means of the latch P the grip is prevented from shifting to take a new hold of the material until the material is firmly held between the dies 0 and D, and thus I avoid the necessity of any supplementary gripping mechanism.
I claim- 1. In a feed mechanism, the combination with the reciprocating part of a machine; of a swinging lever carrying a gripping device; and a cam mechanism operated by said reciprocating part for positively holding said gripping device in operative position during the movement of said part in one direction.
2. In a feed mechanism, the combination with a reciprocating part of a machine; of a swinging lever carrying a gripping device; a cam mechanism operated by said reciprocating part for positively holding said gripping device in operative position during the movement of said partin one direction; and means for disengaging the cam mechanism during the opposite movement of the reciprocating part.
3. In a feed mechanism, the combination with the reciprocating part of the machine, of a swinging lever carrying a gripping device, said lever being moved positively in one direction by said reciprocating part; and a cam mechanism, operated by said reciprocating part, for positively holding said gripping device in operative position during the movement of said reciprocating part to positively move said lever.
4. In a feed mechanism, the combination with the reciprocating part of a machine, of a swinging lever carrying a gripping device, said lever being moved positively in one direction by said reciprocating part; a spring for moving said lever in the opposite direction; and a cam mechanism, operated by said reciprocating part, for positively holding said gripping device in operative position during the movement of said reciproeating part to positively move said lever.
5. In a feed mechanism, the combination with the reciprocating part of a machine, of a swinging lever carrying a gripping device, said lever being moved positively in one direction by said reciprocating part; a spring for moving said lever in the opposite direction; a cam mechanism, operated by said reciprocating part, for positively holding said gripping device in operative position during the movement of said reciprocating part to positively move said lever; and a latch mechanism for retaining said lever against the action of said spring, said latch mechanism being inoperative during the positive feeding movement of the gripping device.
6. In a feed mechanism, the'combination with the reciprocating part of a machine; of a swinging lever carrying a gripping device; a cam mechanism for setting said gripping device; and adjustable devices carried by said reciprocating part for engaging and releasing said cam mechanism to set said gripping devices.
7. In a feed mechanism, the combination with the reciprocating part of amachine; of a swinging lever carryinga grippping device; a spring for moving said lever in one direction; adjustable means carried by said reciprocating part for moving said leverin the opposite direction, and a cam mechanism operated by said reciprocating part for positively holding said gripping device in operative position during the movement of said reciprocating part to move the lever.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 6th day of February, A. D. 1902.
SAMUEL UPTON.
