SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.- 548,343, dated October 22, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. AMBLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at N ewark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in aCombined Single and Du plex Nailing-Machine; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in machines for uniting the soles and uppers of boots and shoes by means of fastenings composed of wire which are fed into the stock to be united and then cut ofi.
In a patent granted to me August 28, 1894, No. 525,066, I have shown and claimed a device to be used in connection with machinery of this class for feeding and inserting two such fastenings simultaneously, either in a continuous row or in two parallel rows, into the stock presented.
The present invention has for its object to provide for use in connection with machines in which two coils of wire are used and in which a working head is employed to convert the machine into a duplex nailing-machine mechanism by means of which only one fastening may be inserted in the stock at each actuation of the machine, or two such fastenings maybe simultaneously fed and inserted into the stock at each actuation, as necessity may require.
The invention therefore consists in the novel arrangements and combinations of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
I have illustrated myimprovements in connection with a nailing-machine of the type illustrated in Letters Patent No. 325,274, of September 1, 1885; but it is applicable to other forms of nailing-machines.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a nailing-machine provided with the mechanism embodying the principles of my invention.- Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the working head and other parts connected therewith with my improvement applied thereto on a larger scale to more clearly illustrate the nature of my invention; and Fig. 3 is a left-hand side elevation of the said parts represented in said Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an edge view, and Fig. 5 a face view, of a lever and operating mechanism connected therewith. Fig. 6 is a detail front view of a wire-gripping device used in connection with my invention, and Fig. 7 is a section taken on line a: in said'Fig. 6.
Similar letters of reference are employed in each of the above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.
In said drawings, A is the frame of the machine, of proper shape to support the various parts, provided with suitable bearings for the main shaft a, having thereon suitable pulleys a and a for receiving the driving-belt.
The several parts of the structure represented in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the drawings, which are old, are the working head and its driving-sleeve B, which is preferably of the construction shown in my previous patent, No. 525,066, which converts the nailing-machine into a duplex nailing or fastening device. Other parts that are old in themselves are the hollow spindle b and its extension, the knuckle-piece a the pitman a which is pivoted'or jointed by a pin 0. directly to a collar a, which is attached to or forms part of the driving-sleeve operating the grippers of the working head, so that the pitman imparts a uniform reciprocatory movement to said working head. Other old features are the yoke a having its fulcrum upon a vertical rod a held rigidly by the framework A.
The other parts of the machine, which are old in themselves, need not be further described in connection with my present invention, since the working thereof will be clearly understood from an inspection of the drawings and specification of said Letters Patent No. 325,274; but it must be borne in mind that the parts within, the said driving-sleeve B are of the construction shown in my pre vious patent, No. 525,066, for a device for feeding and inserting two fastenings simultaneously, these parts being of sucha'construction as to readily permit the revolutions of the spindle when the machine is working as a duplex machine and still not interfering with novel arrangements andcombination of parts in combination with these parts, old in themselves, whereby the machine may be used as a single or a duplex nailing-machine.

1, thereby causing the nosing f on the arm f to be forced tightly against the grippingplate 61 Said plate d slides in the ways or guides d on the side of the cross-head d and l is provided with suitable teeth or serrations 3 d, which are brought against the wire 9, thereby firmly pressing the same against the teeth or serrations d of the fixed gripping-plate d, as clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 7. Said lastmentioned plate d may be formed integral with the slide or cross-head d or may be secured thereto by screws d WVhen the gripping device d is thus caused to firmly grip the wire g, the latter is prevented from being fed from the opening of the working head; but the other wire g is fed into the operating-machin'e in the usual manner Without obstruction and is forced into thestock, being properly cut off at each actuation of the machine.
When it is desired to convert the machine into a duplex nailing-machine, itis necessary to release the gripping device (1', and the result will be that both wires are simultaneously fed through the working head and into the stock. To do this I employ the following arrangement of mechanism: On the base A of the machine I arrange a support It, provided with a horizontally-swinging knee-piece or other suitable operating device it, which when operated pulls on a chain or other flexible connection 71, which is passed through an eye j on the bearing of the shaft a. (Shown in Fig. 1.) Said chain or flexible connection also passes through an eye e in an extension (2 on said arm (2 and is secured to a suitable crankarm 6 pivotally arranged on a pin or screw on the face of the arm 6, and when the flexible connection 11 ispulled it causes a slotted arm 6 of said crank e to be raised. On said arm .6 is a bearing e in which is pivotally arranged a suitable plate 6, having on its face a pin 6 which normally extends into the slot in said arm e and on its back are two other pins a and c which extend into and through suitable openings in the arm 6, as will be clearly seen from an inspection of Figs. aand 5. Now when the crank-arm moves on its pivotal support in the direction of arrow E, (see Fig. 5,) the slotted arm 6 slightly tilts the pin e causing the plate 6 to slightly rotate in its bearing 6 and bringthe pin 6 from the position shown in Fig. 4 to the dotted position indicated in thesame figure, while the pin 6 moves in the direction of arrow E in said figure. Said pin e'flnow projecting farther from the back of the said arm e, it is brought in contact with a suitable projection on the yoke 07. Said vibrating yoke rotates the spindle for abouta quarter-turn, bringing said projection '70 against the pin 6 causing the two arms e andf to assume theirbuckled positions, (illustrated in Fig. 2,) in which positions they are retained as longas the chain or other flexible connection 2' is kept taut by means of the operated knee-piece h. When the two arms *e'andf have assumed these positions, the cam-shaped stop or nosing f is released from its engagement with the side of the gripper or jaw d and the mechanism in the working head is now free to operate upon the wire g,drawing it through said gripping device d without interference and being fed from the throat-piece of the working head by the action of the grippers therein.
The action of thegrippers in the working head upon the wire g is such that when the gripping device d is holding the wire said grippers in the working head will not interfere with the working of the other parts of the machine, while the other wire 9' isfed into and passes through the working head in the usual manner.
When it is desired to again use the machine as a single nailing-machine, the operator releases the pressure from the kneepiece h, and the parts connected with the crank'arm 011 the face of the arm 6 assume their normal positions, (shown in said Figs. 4: and 5,) caused to do so partly by the action of the knee-piece h and the connecting-chain or connection t' and a spring 8 on said plate P, which exerts apressure againstthe arm 6 On said vibrating yoke a is a second projection 7a, which during the quarter-turn of the parts is brought to the other side of the projecting end of the pin e engages therewith on its return, and
once more arranges the arms 6 and f in a straight line, as shown in Fig. 1, forming, practically speaking, a rigid piece,'and causing the wire g to be again held in the jaws of the gripping device 01', at the same time lifting the wire 9 about one-quarter of an inch in the working head, while the other wire 9' is fed from its throat into the stock to be nailed. When the arms 6 and fpass from their buckled positions (shown in Fig. 2) to their straightened positions, (indicated in Fig. 1,) it will be seen that the cross-head d slides upwardly in the frame c, and as soon as the camshaped jaw f on the arm fcauses the grippers d to grip the wire 9 there will be sutficient upward movement of the parts to withdraw the free end of said wire 9 from the throat'of the working head in the latter, so that it will not injure the stock placed under the working head of the machine when used as a single nailing-machine.
From the above description it will be seen that an operative device or mechanism has been constructed resulting in a nailingmachine which can be used as a single or duplex nailing-machine at the will of the operator. Said arms e and f being connected with a collar or have an up-and-down movement, and the said yoke a provided with the projections and it, having a vibratory move ment in a horizontal plane, said stops are brought on the opposite sides of the pins a and e and engage with the respective pins at the proper times to render the mechanism operative for the purposes for which it is intended, as will be clearly understood.
By my improvements I have devised a machine in which two separate fastening-wires differing from each other in size or in the shapes may be fed into the stock and cut-off simultaneously to form a duplex nailing-machine, or but one wire may be fed into the stock and cut-oft", forming a single nailingmachine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a nailing machine of the class herein set forth, the combination,with the working head, and the vibrating yoke of the machine, of mechanism connected therewith for stopping the feeding of the wire through the working head and withdrawing the wire into the same, when stopping the feeding of the wire, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a nailing machine of the class herein set forth, in combination with the working head, and the vibrating yoke of the machine, of a wire gripping or holding device and means for actuating the same to prevent the wire from being fed through the working head and at the same time withdrawing it into the same, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a nailing machine, ofthe class herein set forth, the combination of the spindle and the collar of the driving sleeve, with a wire gripper arranged to slide in a frame on said machine, and means connected with said collar of the driving sleeve and said gripper for operating the same, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. In a nailing machine of the class described, thecombination, of the spindle and the collar of the driving sleeve thereon, with a wire gripper arranged to slide in a frame on said machine, an arm, as e, pivotally connected at one end with the collar of the driving sleeve on the spindle, an armf, pivotally connected with said arm 6 and the said gripper, and mechanism on said arm e, for operating said arms 6 and f and releasing the jaws of the wire gripper, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. In a nailing machine of the class herein set forth, the slide or cross head d, a pair of gripping jaws thereon, and the arms e andf, combined with a collar a of the driving sleeve, and means, as set forth, to operate the same.
6. In a nailing machine of the class herein set forth, the combination, of the vibrating yoke a having projections in and k, with an arm e, means on said arm adapted to be engaged by said projections, a Wire gripper arranged to slide in a frame in said machine, and an arm, as f, connected With said wire gripper and the said arm 6, all arranged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
7. In a nailing machine of the class herein set forth, the slide or cross head d having guides (1 a fixed gripping jaw and a movable jaw d in said guides, an arm f having a camlike extension, adapted to engage with said jaw (i and an arm e, combined with the collar a of the driving sleeve, and means for actuating said arms, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
8. In a nailing machine of the class herein set forth, the combination of the vibrating yoke a having projections 70 and is, with an arm e, a spring-actuated crank arm pivotally arranged on said arm e, having a slotted arm e for actuating said plate, and pins 2 and e on the back of said plate extending through openings in the arm e, to be engaged by said projections, substantially as and for the pur poses set forth.
9. In a nailing machine of the class herein set forth, the combination, of the vibrating yoke a having projections in and 70', with an arm e,a spring-actuated crank arm pivotally arranged on said arm e, having a sl tted arm e for actuating said plate, and pins a and e on the back of said plate extending through openings in the arm e, to be engaged by said projections, a frame, as c, a cross-head or slide in said frame provided with a wire gripper, an arm or link connecting said cross-head or slide and the one end of said arm e, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
10. In a nailing machine of the class herein set forth, the combination, of the vibrating yoke a having projections 70 and k, with an arm e, a spring-actuated crank arm pivotally slotted arm 6 for actuating said plate, and
pins a and e onthe back of said plate extending through openings in the arm 6, to be engaged by said projections, and means for operating said crank arm and the parts connected therewith, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
11. In a nailing machine of the class herein set forth, the combination, of the vibrating yoke a having projections 70 and 7a, with an arm 6, a spring-actuated crank-arm pivotally arranged on said arm 6, having a slotted arm a, a plate 6 having a pin extending into said slotted arm e for actuating said plate, and pins a and e on the back of said plate extending through openings in the arm e, to be engaged by said projections, and means for operating said crank-arm and the parts connected therewith, consisting essentially, of a pivoted knee-piece, as h, and a flexible connection between said knee piece and said crank-arm, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
12. In a nailing machine of the classherein set forth, arm e, crank arm a thereon, having a slotted arm 6 a plate e pivotally mounted in a bearing on said arm 6, a pin on said plate extending into said slotted arm a, and pins e and e on the opposite side of said plate extending through openings in said arm 6, combined with a vibrating yoke a and means thereon, adapted to engage with said pins a and 6 substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
