To (ZZZ whom z'Z may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED STEPHEN KING, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Hollinsclough, Eaton Road, Norwich, in the county of Norfolk, England, have invented new and useful Tmprovements in Box-Lid-Nailing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in box lid nailing machines which are especially applicable for securing the lids of boxes made in accordance with my former Patent No. 1,026,679, granted May 21, 1912.
According to this invention the portable nailing machine comprises a standard or frame carrying a nail chute, at the bottom of which is a nail chuck or holder, and a nail plunger or hammer for driving the nails from the nail chuck. The standard or frame is supported on the lid of the box by base plates and is held up to the side or end of the box by a downwardly extending stop or jaw secured to one end of one or both of the base plates which by slotted adjustment serves as a gage to enable the machine to be held in proper position for a nail to be driven at the place required through the lid of the box and into its side or end. This stop or jaw has a recessed face which allows a projecting lid to overhang the side of the box.
The drawings show two machines made in accordance with this invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a front elevation partly in section. (In both these views the nail plunger is shown in its lowest position). Fig. 3 is a View of the lower part of the nail chute, before the plunger has been depressed, of one machine. Fig. 4 is a side elevation. Fig. 5 is a part vertical section. Fig. 6 is a part front elevation. Fig. 7 is a front elevation partly in section. Fig. 8 is a plan of another machine. Fig. 9 shows the jaw for engaging the bottom of the box.

The stop Z is preferably formed with a recessed face 2 which allows a projecting lid to overhang the side of the box.
In using the machine the base plates .7L and stop 2' are first set at the desired gaged distance and angle. The standard is held by the left hand and pressed against the box.
A nail 7' is dropped into the chute e and is driven into the lid by depressing the head 0.
In the machine shown in Figs. a to 8 the shape of the standard a is modified but the nail chute and nail chuck are of similar construction. The plunger 5 is connected by pins Z) L to links 6 b which are connected by pins Z2 5 to a bell crank lever 70 pivoted at it" to the frame. The base plates it and the downwardly extending jaw Z are secured together at the desired angle and at the desired distance apart by nuts if it on the bolts it it.
To the downwardly projecting stop 2' in either of the machines shown may be pivoted at 2" an arm 2' which carries upon it a jaw i The jaw is adjustably secured to the arm 2' by a screw i A spring i constantly presses against a stud i at the upper end 2' of the arm. When the end Z is pressed against the box the arm moves about the pivot causing the jaw 2' to engage with the bottom of the box. Another jaw Z for pressing against the other side of the box is car ried by a lug Z adjustably secured to a screw rod Z Z is a spring held between the end of the lug and the shoulder Z of the jaw. The rod Z is connected to a plate Z capable of sliding in slots h in the base plates it.
Z is a bell crank lever one end of which Z enters a slot in the plate Z while the other Z is acted upon by a cam 70 on the lever 70. The aw Z is drawn toward the side of the box by the action of the lever 70 as the cam 70 depresses the end Z of the bell crank lever Z causing the other end Z to move the plate Z When the lever 70 is moved back the spring Z causes the end Z -to rise and so free the jaw Z.
The nails j are contained in a hopper m pivoted to the frame at m and connected to the lever 70 by link m The nails issue from the hopper m to a nail supply channel n at the bottom of which is a nail feed plate 0. The feed plate 0 has on its periphery a number of notches 0 of different size for use with nails of similar size and the feed plate 0 is carried by another plate 0 points 0 on which enter holes in the feed plate. The plates 0 and 0 are held together the handle 7) is held in the left hand and the machine is placed on the top of the box. The handle 0 is pressed against the action of the spring 0 by the left thumb which causes a nail to'be fed to the nail chuck. The lever 70 is then pulled toward the operator by the right hand. This causes the plunger Z) to descend and at the same time causes the jaw Z to grip the box. The nail hopper m being also connected to the lever 76 the hopper is lifted causing the nails to fall into the channel at. i

A portable nailing machine constructed and arranged for nailing down the lids of boxes, comprising a standard carrying a nail chute, a nail chuck at the bottom of the chute, a nail plunger reciprocable in the standard, supporting base plates secured to i the lower end of the standard, a downwardly extending stop secured to one end of a base plate, an arm pivoted to the downwardly extending stop, and a jaw carried by the arm and constructed and arranged to engage with the bottom of the box.

A portable nailing machine constructed andarranged tor nailing down the lids of boxes, comprising a standard carrying a nail chute, a nail chuck atthe bottom of the chute, a nail plunger reciprocable in the standard, a nail hopper, a lever actuating the nail plunger and the nail hopper, supporting base plates secured to the lower end of the standard, a downwardly extending stop secured to one end of a base plate, and a jaw carried by the base plates and arranged to press the box against the downwardly extending stop, the said jaw being arranged to be operated by said lever.
