Abstract

703,983. Stamping or shaping cartons &c. FRANGHIA, S. B. Nov. 18, 1949 [Nov. 20, 1948], No. 29587/49. Class 100 (2). [Also in Group XVII] A machine for pressing a cup-shaped container from a blank, the container having crimped sides and peripheral flutings or beadings around the upper edge, comprises a plunger 8 movable towards a fixed support 19 through a co-axial reciprocating annulus 28, the annulus and fixed support carrying opposed rows of intercalating pivoted pawls 25, 41 for crimping the container sides. Sheet material 49 is fed across the support 19 by rollers 58, 51, 62, 63 and passes between the upper and lower rows of pawls which are horizontal and separated when the plunger is in its uppermost position. As the plunger descends, the annulus 28 is moved downwards by a cam 37 through linkage 30-35 to clamp the sheet 49 under a spring-loaded ring 43 and cut the blank with a cutter 39. The blank is clamped and crimped betwen the pawls which tilt to press it against the sides of the plunger. The plunger forces the partly formed container into a die comprising separable sectors 23 brought together against return springs 27 by rods 42, carried by the annulus 28, acting on cam surfaces integral with the sectors. The head 13 of the plunger is movable into the body against a spring 14 and in the final stage of pressing. a cone 48 forces outwardly elements 47 which press the upper end of the container into peripheral serrations in the die. On the return stroke of the plunger, the annulus 28 rises, releasing the material 49 and permitting the sectors of the die to separate to release the completed container.
