Abstract

1351568 Making wheels; stamping; coining WALLACE EXPANDING MACHINES Inc 9 May 1972 [17 May 1971] 21605/72 Headings B3A B3Q and B3H A method of forming a wheel assembly having a rim and a spider comprises enclosing a continuous annular metal workpiece 26 having a spider 28 within outer dies 23, 24, which correspond to the desired final radial form of the rim, contacting edges 27 of the workpiece with annular stuffing ledges 52, 53 (Fig. 6) on inner dies 21, 22, exerting force axially against the edges 27 with the inner dies to cause plastic deformation of the workpiece, axially loading the inner dies against the spider 28 to cause plastic deformation of the spider subsequent to the contacting stop but during the plastic deformation of the workpiece, and holding a rod 71 (Fig. 6) centrally with respect to the ledges 52, 53 and axially through the spider during the axially loading step to maintain a hole through the spider as it plastically deforms around the rod. In the embodiment shown the die 24 is fixed to frame 33 and has an ejector 44 (Fig. 5) operated, via rods 46, 55 and pivoted beam 48, by a pivoted unloader 56. The die 23, having a spring biased ejector 67, is vertically reciprocable such that, when a workpiece is placed on the die 24 by pivoted loader 62, the dies 23, 24 are held apart from the dies 21, 22 by a distance greater than the thickness of the workpiece. The dies 21, 22 are moved towards each other by rams 75 and tapered rings 94 contact tapered sides 97 of the outer die supports 34, 35 to lock the dies 23, 24 together. The rod 71 can form a flanged portion 74 around the hole 29 or may coin a depression around the hole (Fig. 7, not shown).
