1324090 Making pulleys; forging; rolling A F J CARRIER 1 Nov 1971 [10 Nov 1970] 53309/70 Headings B3A B3H and B3M [Also in Division F2] A method of making a pulley for a gearbelt transmission comprises forming a metal blank 10 having a cylindrical portion 11 between two integral flanges 12A, 12B, with one or more spaces 15, 25 inside the cylindrical portion, and displacing parts of the cylindrical portion radially inwards to leave teeth 17 round the cylindrical portion. The blank, which may be of aluminium, aluminium alloy or steel, is supported by an anvil 20 having a semicircular recess 21 engaging the cylindrical portion 11. The blank is formed either with a series of holes 15 or an annular recess 25, Fig. 9. In the latter case it is supported on an anvil 27 having an annular projection 28, which is provided with circumferentially spaced axially extending grooves 29. The teeth 17 are formed by a punch 19 in cooperation with either of the anvils 20, 27 or by a toothed rack (23), Fig. 6 (not shown), in cooperation with the anvil 20. Alternatively they may be formed by a toothed wheel in a press. After the teeth have been formed, the pulley is removed from the anvil and what remains of the holes 15 or of the recess 25 is filled with plastics or resin material (22), Fig. 5 (not shown). The pulley may be anodized or plated.
