Abstract

722,276. Making bearings. GLACIER METAL CO., Ltd. March 10, 1953 [Feb. 21, 1952], No. 4608/52. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Forging.-In a method of making half-liners for plain bearings a semi-cylindrical blank 3, Fig. 1, of a thickness less than that of the finished liner is subjected to upsetting pressure along its edges while confined between convex and concave dies 1, 2 defining the required shape. The dies are engaged between press rams 5, 6 and a yielding member 7 and the internal die 1 has flanges 1b, Fig. 2, defining the end edges of the liner and locating the dies at the required distance apart. Upsetting pressure is applied along the joint edges 3a by a double punch 4 mounted on a ram 8. In a modification the blank 3 is confined at the joint edges by a die 10, Fig. 3, with projections 10c and upsetting pressure is applied on the semi-circular ends by dies (not shown). Oil holes, grooves &c. may be roughly formed in the blank before insertion and are formed accurately during upsetting by excrescences on the die members. The blanks may be polished or electro-surface etched before insertion in the dies and may be lubri. cated with molybdenum disulphide applied by brushing or applied as a suspension in alcohol. An electro-deposited bearing surface of soft metal may be applied before or after the upsetting operation. Specifications 177,206, [Class 83 (ii)], 409,289 and 685,319 are referred to.
