Abstract

Bearings and bearing-surfaces; pistons.-Metal parts which are subjected to frictional forces of a mainly sliding character, such as bearing- brasses and pistons, are made by a process which causes the fibres of the metal to be parallel to the direction of the frictional forces. The disposition of the fibres mav be obtained by mechanical or other means such as die-pressing, stamping, forging, punching, rolling, and the like. In forming a bearing brass, the blank, Fig. 1, having its fibres running longitudinally, is first formed by drawing, rolling, or other means, and is then pressed between dies 2, 3 of the required form, thus causing the fibres to assume the position shown in Fig. 4. Bearing brasses of more complex shape may be produced by first roughly shaping the blank as shown in Fig. 6, and then supporting the inner surface of the bearing on a mandrel 4 while the sides are shaped between dies 5, 6. Pistons made in accordance with the invention have the fibres of the cylindrical surface running parallel to the piston axis. The process is particularly applicable to parts made of magnesium.
