Abstract

497,270. Piercing billets. STEWARTS & LLOYDS, Ltd. June 15, 1937, No. 16588. Convention date, April 12. [Class 83 (iv)] Punches.-In piercing an incandescent iron or steel billet to form thick walled cup-shaped hollow bodies a flat piercing disc of cast iron is employed and is forced into the billet and remains behind in the hole produced. Friction, suction, electromagnetic or other means is employed to maintain the disc in contact with the pressing element such as a punch. As shown, the punch d is made slightly smaller than the disc c, which corresponds to the size of the hole h, a projection e, which may be slightly conical, being provided for engaging and positioning the disc.
