Abstract

1426340 Forging GLAENZER SPICER 10 July 1973 [10 July 1972] 32910/73 Heading B3H A rolling element for a homokinetic coupling or bearing is made by cold forming a cylindrical blank in a die by forcing the blank into the die while an increasing counterpressure pressure is exerted on the blank. In one embodiment the blank 28, Fig. 3, is annular and formed by a die 6 and plunger 11 in a recess 8 in the die corresponding to the required curvature of the rolling surface (2), Fig. .1 (not shown), of the element. The counterpressure .is applied by a spring- urged ejector 18 which is moved into the die bore 7 by the blank as it is advanced by the blank as it is advanced by the plunger 11. The blank is lubricated with graphite. Plane surfaces 9, 12 on the die and plunger respectively limit the penetration of the plunger projection 13 into the die A mandrel 24 is provided with burnishing rings 26 to polish the bore 29 of the element. In an alternative embodiment a solid cylindrical blank 67, Fig. 6, is cold formed in a die 44 by a plunger 49 whilst a counterpressure is applied by a spring-urged ejector 57. The plunger 49 has passages 54 for the escape of lubricant. The spring may be replaced by an hydraulic, pneumatic or mechanical -elastic device. After cold-forming the rolling element is hardened by quenching and polished in a drum.
